Today is National Grammar Day so, rather than giving you just one Tuesday Tip, we thought we'd share five easy-to-avoid mistakes:
Can the word you want to use be replaced with 'you are'? If so, use 'you're'.
Same principle as above - can the word want use be replaced with 'it is'? If so, use 'it's'.
3) 'Tom and I' vs. 'Tom and me'
Replace the 'Tom and ___' part of your sentence with 'we', does it make sense? If so, use 'I'. If not, use 'me'.
E.g. Tom and I are going to the cinema.
Replace the 'Tom and ___' part of your sentence with 'us', does it make sense? If so, use 'me'. If not, use 'I'.
E.g. Would you like to come to the cinema with Tom and me?
'Then' is for indicating a time, 'than' is for indicating a comparison.
Think of 'th[e]n' as comparable to another word that indicates time: 'wh[e]n' - both words are spelt with the letter 'e'.
‘[A]ffect’ describes an [a]ction, whereas ‘[e]ffect’ describes the [e]nd consequence.
