Exploring caves can be very dangerous. This story is progressing as they attempt to bring the trapped boys out through flooded and narrow rock openings.

Twelve members of a boys soccer team and their coach were trapped in the cave by rising floodwaters more than a week ago. "We found them safe," Chiang Rai Gov. Narongsak Osotthanakorn says.

Post updated to include recent death resulting from sinkhole. https://spookygeology.com/sinkholes/

Perhaps some people have an exaggerated fear of sinkholes. The thought of the foundation falling out from under our feet is terrifying when the seemingly stable ground is suddenly rendered unstable…

The man attempted to help other boaters who were ejected. But his kayak overturned and he drowned. I have seen more than one of these in-stream sinkholes in Pennsylvania. They are extremely dangerous. It would be interesting to know the groundwater hydrology here to determine why the water was sucked into the river bed. Rivers are typically fed by the groundwater coming up, not the other way around. The groundwater levels must be lower than the river bottom in this location.

According to legend, Pele, Hawaiian deity of volcanoes, clashes with her sister, Nāmakaokaha‘i, Hawaiian deity of the sea, and stories of their encounters refle...ct the tumultuous interactions that occur when lava meets the sea.

A helicopter overflight of Kīlauea Volcano’s lower East Rift Zone on June 6, 2018, around 5:00 PM, documents conditions at the lava/ocean interface. The white plume is laze, a mixture of condensed acidic steam, hydrochloric acid gas, and tiny shards of volcanic glass that is irritating to the lungs, eyes and skin. The laze plume drifts with the wind and health effects dissipating quickly.

Lava entering the ocean builds a platform of new land known as a lava delta. This new land appears stable, but the surface veneer of lava hides a foundation of loose rubble. As lava deltas grow seaward and along the shoreline, they slowly settle or sink as the loose debris shifts under the weight of the overlying lava flow. When the underlying debris can no longer support a delta's growing mass or is undercut by wave erosion, the delta can collapse into the ocean.

Beginning on June 3, lava from fissure 8 entered the ocean at Kapoho Bay. By June 6, lava completely filled Kapoho Bay and built a delta that extends over a mile from shore.

It's amazing more weren't killed. Unlike Hawaii's fissures, Volcan de Fuego is explosive and produces fast flows of hot ash and gases.

The death toll is expected to rise.

As molten rock flies through the air, it forms into substances known as Pele's hair and tears. So-called Pele's hair, named after the Goddess of Fire who inhabits Kilauea volcano, is vitrified lava, or threads of glass that looks very much like golden hair. Millimeters in thickness but sometimes very long, they are lightweight and carried by the wind. Strands of the "hair" blown in the wind collect in clumps on the ground or in vegetation. Why earthquakes are worse in the eastern US. https://www.usgs.gov/news/east-vs-west-coast-earthquakes

A magnitude 5.8 earthquake in 2011 in Mineral, Virginia, was felt up to 600 miles from the epicenter. Tens of millions of people in the eastern United States and southeastern Canada felt this earthquake.

Living on an active volcano is scary. Kilauea status is ORANGE.

"Geologists reported this evening that the presence of sulfur gas is quite noticeable around the fissure, typical of active and recently active fissures. The concentration of sulfur dioxide gas is high within tens of meters (yards) of the fissure."

"Tiltmeters at Kīlauea's summit continue to record deflationary tilt and the lava lake level has dropped about 37 m (121 ft) in the past 24 hours."

...

"The opening phases of fissure eruptions are dynamic and uncertain. Additional erupting fissures and new lava outbreaks may occur. It is not possible at this time to say when and where new vents may occur."

"Areas downslope of an erupting fissure or vent are at risk of lava inundation. At this time, the general area of the Leilani subdivision appears at greatest risk."

Hart Island is New York City’s “potters field” where one million of the poor, unclaimed, or unidentified dead are buried. Since 1868, bodies have been interred on the island making it the nation’s largest cemetery. Islands, however, are not great places for burial due to high water tables and erosion. Strong storms in the past few years have eaten away at the land and exposed remains, most of which were interred in mass graves or wooden coffins. [ 361 more words ]

Freaked out about the Yellowstone supervolcano? Meh, there have been worse. Much worse.

The volcanic explosivity index uses the amount of pyroclastic material ejected as a measure of explosivity. Some eruptions are millions of times more explosive than others.

Despite centuries of reports of anomalous luminous phenomena (ANP) - lights, glows, flames, sparks and clouds - before, during or after an earthquake, the scientific view of such reports remains deeply divided. The evidence for earthquake lights (EQLs) and associated anomalies consists overwhelmingly of anecdotal accounts. But scientific evidence has been accumulating, and in the past 10 years plausible theory to explain the host of unusual precursors has been proposed. [ 6,591 more words ]
