Canada is hosting Pride House at the Winter Olympics, providing a safe space for LGBTQ athletes.

We are deeply saddened but not surprised by a not guilty verdict in the trial of Gerald Stanley. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of Colten Boushie this evening. We echo the FSIN's call for calm.

A must read. Trigger warning.

Great work is happening in our sector. Toronto Rape Crisis Centre/Multicultural Women Against Rape (TRCC/MWAR) is just one of those agencies doing it.

We work in solidarity with 2SLGBTQ+ communities and organizations like The 519 to address ongoing experiences of systemic homophobic, Transphobic and racist violence.

Public Statement

The 519 extends heartfelt condolences to the loved ones of Majeed Kayhan, Soroush Mahmudi and Dean Lisowick - and offers stren...gth to the families of all those still missing.

As the horror of this tragedy unfolds, the need to elevate some important conversations increases.

That a serial killer went undetected for years, raises critical questions about vulnerabilities and the intersection of vulnerabilities that many members of our community experience - homophobia and transphobia combined with vulnerabilities of racism, poverty or homelessness.

Protecting the most marginalized and vulnerable - whether it is by instituting the same standards of justice, or by having the same level of public interest that demands accountability - is imperative and urgent.

The 519 continues to work with our partner organizations and the community to advocate for equity and justice for our communities.

We will also continue to support the community through drop-in counselling. A counsellor will be available on-site tonight from 6:00 to 8:30pm at The 519. Additional information about counselling support at The 519 and other community partners will be duly shared through our social media platforms.
