In South Australia were a novel, it would find itself a place amongst the classic tragic comedies. For a while the bromance between its vapid Premier, Jay Weatherill and Californian carpetbagger, Elon Musk might’ve earned a place in the ‘rom/com’ category, as well. However, now that Jay Weatherill is determined to keep the lights on this Summer and beyond using diesel fuelled jet engines - instead of powering SA with sunshine and breezes captured and stored lovingly in Musk’s mega-batteries - that romance is clearly at an end. STT is not sure whether it’s just an Australian thing, but about 30 years ago capital cities around the country set out to find an international doppelgänger somewhere else in the world, willing to be referred to as their ‘Sister City’. Adelaide, the capital of that beleaguered economic backwater, South Australia has four of them: Christchurch in New Zealand; Austin, Texas in the USA; Himeji in Japan; and Georgetown, Penang in Malaysia. As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words. The picture above speaks volumes about the real cost of wind and solar power to the people that really matter: power consumers. Before we unpack some of the gems glittering in the power price league table above, we’ll hand over to one of the few Liberal MPs who appreciates the seriousness of Australia’s self-inflicted renewable energy calamity. Australia’s self-inflicted power pricing and supply calamity lunges from the patently absurd to the utterly ridiculous. In the week just gone, Australia’s patrician and aloof PM, Malcolm Turnbull dragged the heads of Australia’s electricity retailers to Canberra for a shellacking that was supposed to impress Australia’s battered and beleaguered power consumers. To STT though, the PM’s performance was more political theatre and the veiled threats to retailers reminded STT of the bellicose but witless Dean Vernon Wormer in… [ 2,577 more words ]

Environmentalists of the kind lovingly called ‘tree huggers’ (rather than wind turbine worshippers) are finally cottoning on to the fact that the wind industry is anything but the ‘clean, green’ energy source its proponents claim it to be. In this piece, Emily Wade makes her indignation palpable; it’s almost as if she’s been played for a dupe. In that regard, Emily can be forgiven. [ 1,138 more word ]

Researchers have been underestimating the cost of wind and solar Our Finite World Gail Tverberg 22 July 2017 How should electricity from wind turbines and solar panels be evaluated? Should it be evaluated as if these devices are stand-alone devices? Or do these devices provide electricity that is of such low quality, because of its intermittency and other factors, that we should recognize the need for supporting services associated with actually putting the electricity on the grid? If your understanding of the world is limited to what’s printed in the mainstream press, you’d be forgiven for thinking that rural folk can’t wait to nuzzle up to 300 tonne Vestas, with 70m blades towering 180m above them. Step out of the inner-city comfort zone, and the picture is just a little different. In America, as in Australia and elsewhere, rural communities are united in one thing: they hate these things, with a passion. [ 833 more words ]

In the heavy metal mockumentary, This is Spinal Tap, the band’s himbo front man, Nigel Tufnel struggles with almost everything, including bringing his grating, 8 minute guitar solos to an end. For Nigel, 10 isn’t enough - his Marshall amp has to go one better (see the video above). Australia’s enviable prosperity isn’t due to sunshine and glinting solar panels or windmills flailing in the breeze, it’s down to iron ore, coal and a bevy of other minerals including copper and uranium of the kind being gouged out of the ground by BHP Billiton at Roxby Downs in South Australia’s North (see above). How long Australia maintains its wealth and enviable prosperity is down to energy policy and what happens next. [ 3,284 more words ]

Australian politics is often a feast of the bizarre. And one of the more bizarre dishes on the menu was watching Al Gore (the original global warming alarmist profiteer) stand side-by-side with big Clive Palmer (the original overstuffed windbag, come political buffoon) back in June 2014. Back then, big Clive was at the top of his game and managed to take Al Gore and the media pack that fawned over him for first class fools. [ 1,965 more word ]

South Australia’s vapid Premier, Jay Weatherill presides over a self-inflicted social and economic calamity and rebukes his critics as “right-wing fu%@wits”; notwithstanding that his obsession with wind power has left his beleaguered State with the highest power prices in the world and a grid on the brink of total collapse. Whether it’s the looming threat of mass blackouts and load shedding this coming summer, the 140% increase in the number of homes disconnected from the grid (families unable to pay power bills increasing at 20%, year-on-year) or thousands of pensioners freezing in the dark, Australia’s decade-long dalliance with sunshine and breezes just got serious. Hitherto oblivious to their constituents’ plight, a few politicians have recently started to wake up to the scale and scope of the damage being done by massively subsidised wind and solar power. Starting next week, hard-pressed households and battered businesses will start receiving power bills which will be between 16 and 20% higher than the same time last year. In Australia, the underlying rate of inflation is around 1.5%. Punitive power bills have left 25% of households unable to heat their homes during the depth of an Australian winter. The primary cause of Australia’s rocketing power prices and unstable power grid is the Federal government's Large-Scale Renewable Energy Target: the largest single industry subsidy scheme in the history of the Commonwealth, and the greatest mandated wealth transfer of all time. South Australians must wake up each morning in the vain hope that it’s all just a very bad dream. Alas, their sorry reality is one dictated by wind worshipping lunatics, not least its vapid Premier, Jay Weatherill. Last week, Weatherill launched an astonishing tirade against Chris Kenny - a columnist with The Australian and The Advertiser - calling him a “right-wing fuckwit” for having the temerity to point out one or two fairly obvious facts about the unfolding disaster caused by Weatherill’s obsession with wind power. For those unfortunates forced to live with incessant turbine generated low-frequency noise and infrasound, the cause of the sleep deprivation they suffer is no mystery. Moreover, a menagerie of domestic and wild animals stuck next to wind turbines suffer similar effects, including well-documented increases in the stress hormone cortisol (see our post here). Dr Mariana Alves-Pereira has been studying the effect of noise and vibration on humans and animals for nearly 20 years. [ 835 more words ]
