TIL the reddish\purple sand of Strawberry Island is garnet, which is heavier than quartz sands. That's why it collects together. The black sands are typically magnetite which can be picked up with a magnet.

It's official. Strawberry Island bay has been closed to motorized vessels. Kayaks and canoes are still welcome. This decision was made by the NYS DEC to prevent further damage and erosion to the island and marine areas, as well as protect the fish & wildlife.

Monday I had the great joy to go out on the Upper Niagara River with a good friend of mine Joe Ziolkowski. We spent the entire day out around Strawberry Island ...and during that time I was able to take a TON of photos of the various residents on Motor Island, Strawberry Island and the newest additions to the area there.
One of the highlights was at the end of the day as we circled the island to get a look at the Eagle nest from the south side, Mom flew over us with this dining remnant on her way out towards Canada. There were two immature eagles in the nest. More images to follow.
