A huge Thank You to everyone who helped out, who dropped in, who gave their support and who donated yesterday at our Legal Advice Open Day for National Pro Bono Week. Particular thanks to our volunteer lawyers from Prettys and Immigration Legal Services, and our friends at Ipswich Housing Action Group, Ipswich Disabled Advice Bureau, Suffolk RapeCrisis and Ipswich Community Media who ran information desks. We raised over £160!! And there were more donations to our Crowdfunder on: https://mydonate.bt.com/events/alawcentreforsuffolk, as well as a cheque for £100 in the post! We make that a #WinningWednesday - in spite of the rain!

According to the Xmas Clock, there's only 55 days to go until Christmas Day, which means that we can reveal our beautiful Christmas card, an original art work by solicitor and artist, Anthony Wooding, which we are selling in aid of A Law Centre for Suffolk. Form an orderly queue. These can be bought at our Legal Advice Open Day as part of National Pro Bono Week on Wednesday 8th November - from 11am - 3pm at ISCRE.
Thank you so much to everyone at Birketts, particularly the clever bakers who made some amazing Hallowe'en Bake Off creations to sell in aid of A Law Centre for Suffolk. A very happy Suffolk Law Centre Steering Group representative was asked to judge the best cake this morning and after some deliberation (yes, tasting...yum) was pleased to announce a winner in this tightly fought battle of the bakes. Congratulations Rebecca on your quite scary but very delicious chocolate and orange spider cake.
Good to see such strong support for Greater Manchester Law Centre from Kenworthy's Chambers! Thank you for highlighting our campaign here in Suffolk to establish A Law Centre for Suffolk. We have had great support from our local Chambers and law firms, for which we are very grateful, but we are still fundraising - and still have a way to go! 14% of our target figure reached!! #accesstojustice
As our supporters will be aware, Kenworthy's Chambers recently donated a percentage of their Barristers' fees to GMLC, amounting to £11035.11.
Due to law centre... closures and cuts to legal services, we rely on innovative funding methods. This has included asking individual lawyers to donate 0.5% of their monthly earnings as part of a Lawyers Fund Generation Scheme. Following discussions with Andy Burnham prior to the Mayoral election, we delivered an open letter and petition to the Mayor’s office in July this year, inviting him to encourage well-off lawyers to make a financial contribution to help offset the cuts to the poorest (and unfunded) lawyers.
It is therefore wonderful to see the same thing happening in Suffolk. We are grateful for all the lawyers who support the pro bono, charitable and legal aid services; and at the same time we will continue to call for the restoration of legal aid nationally.
In the words of our patron Robert Lizar: “Pro bono is not enough; it is a fraction of what is desperately needed in terms of legal support for our communities.”
Yay! We're in the EADT and Ipswich Star today, sharing the news about our generous donations from Birketts and EA Law. We'd love to give a further boost to our funds - let's smash that target! http://www.eadt.co.uk/…/cash-boost-for-suffolk-law-centre-c…
