Audience sunrise massachusetts we're out here at Fred Richard neil's office out here in springfield massachusetts. We brought a ton of the constituents to show up and demand that Richard the up Coast box and the Green new deal. We got out here fighting for our future and we want to get richer deal to understand the urgency that we see in this problem, climate change at the United Nations report on climate change, saying we only have 10 years left to address this problem. We need representing Neil He's the only representative in massachusetts that is not Co sponsored this resolution yet so we're gonna hear from some of his constituents and some other speakers today have a why Richard neal need to Co sponsor. The Green new deal All right, all right I mean that's part From williamstown massachusetts gear it to tell Richard Neil why it's so important that he Co sponsors, the Green new deal Okay sorry, very windy I've always considered myself when I'm in Congress. I'm in consciousness with what was the North growing up millions for compost. Minter is comedy how to go to places as I cautioned her. However, I slowly began to realized that are cycling carpet taxes were not enough. An ironman will science last year between giggling with my friends and writing on the tables, a great uneasiness settled my started still not uneasiness, was rarely more than a quick tug at the back of my mind, when I saw particularly upsetting headline or watch somebody in power lately and ignore climate trend. Last July I tagged along with my dad, to Shanghai where he teaches during the summer this mug isn't too bad. This time of year. He told me most days. It was hardly noticeable. There are so many other things to notice great crowds of people, shirts with nonsensical English slogans and thick hot humid air that felt like a great way to finish settled on my shoulders, but sometimes when we went out on the River, I can see the smoky air settling on the This market look like it was supposed to like it did in pictures. It didn't look dangerous. It looks beautiful. The way the fog settles over the mountains, Sun really berkshire mornings every memory went the appliances where you go friendly toilets washing machines refrigerators in Hong Joe parts of the cities where section off and only certain cars were allowed to pass through some days. They let odd numbered license plates and other days, even once when I got home the uneasiness in my stomach was nine with more force the smartness of Once lush forest was signaling the bones of the electric companies that had long since shut down were more noticeable. I wonder if the us would ever try to enact a large scale climate initiative and I decided it wouldn't. I became cynical. I laughed in my mother's face when she fished out of a plastic bag from the trash and throw it in the recycling bin. You think that matters the fact of the matter is that individual actions are not enough incremental policy changes are not enough. Communities are suffering ecosystems are suffering. We need a plan Economic policy with National climate action, we cannot have one without the other. We need to address massive income inequality. We need to transition jobs into clean energy. We cannot ask consumers to put the burden of climate policies. We must hold massive corporations accountable. No matter how much money they put into politicians pockets, nationwide. I am feeling a surge of optimism that has been absent in the four years for me and many other young people like me the new Progressive coalition in the Democratic party is a well of new hope. yes Dishes yes, they speak out of turn and they refused to hold to those with more experience and yes, no, no now that I eighteen. I am excited to vote for people who take these steps because they may seem radical but they are necessary The Green new deal is something we've, not seen for a long time. It is a timid, it isn't pragmatic. It is as Nancy pelosi said, a Green Dream. There is no time for compromise. There is no time for kowtowing to the whims of corporations. We must act and we must act now. A Green new deal is our only option. It is the only option for our district a district ravaged by dn dust realization still haunted by the pollution and unemployment left behind when spouse spray and general electric electric packed up and left us a district face with rapid changing ecosystem that, by 20 100 who resemble that of South Carolina A district which, along with the rest of the country, faces the most dangerous threat of all complacency, we cannot sit idly by and expect that someone else will solve this. For us. We cannot accept that the dianne feinstein's of the world quote, know what they're doing so to congressman Neil. I say this people do not hesitate. We don't have time to hesitate and to all of you guys say, remember this even if you may not always feel like it you're going matters Do not allow yourself to come to place it make your voice count Amazing I a hundred percent agree and this is exactly why we're out here calling on Rep Richard neal to Co sponsor the Green new deal Ready yeah go All right, all right People We have people Come on down stop by come They tried to stop us from please keep up with rise up rise up take this one There's people up And down But the people Sundown Try to stop us. We keep come and go and try this out. But we keep coming back So up next, we have nick brad from Boston massachusetts is here to tell why he's out here in springfield at two hour drive away to call me only massachusetts representative that is not Coast parts of the Green new deal There you go Alright here we go again okay so it's not easy to come up in front of all these people and say what I'm about to say for a variety of reasons. I feel, like I shouldn't be up here. I won't be as affected by climate change as people across the world have already bit from Bangladesh to the mall deeds. People just like me, have already been experiencing and stream affect of climate change and losing their normal way of life as a result so who am Come up here and talk about how I will be affected. How I'm scared going thing. That I have in common with someone struggling to deal with unprecedented flooding in Bangladesh or another from a small island nation to clearing triumphantly. That they refuse to die is that none of us chose this light. None of us chose to be born into this existence. If there's anything that unites all people it's the fact that we were given no options before we were created and forced into a world that often cares nothing for us we're To struggle against the cold frequently uncaring world and most of us can only do so much to fight back so this is where my story comes in. Why I am also deeply affected by climate changes. Nothing is done about it. I know that my world is severely scarred as I transition as I transition from the ignorant carefree years of my childhood into the realities of the world. I was forced to come to grips with the fact that I am condemned to fight against an unjust reality. Those Before me, whether through malice or just plain ignorance, morphed and contorted the world into something more hideous than most had ever wish I'm now in the early years of my adult life whereas my parents and the entire generation before me had chosen in this period of their lives to continue the human experiment to usher in the next generation to continue their fight. I find myself hesitated hesitate Doesn't, even do it Justice. I find myself for bolted terrified and embarrassed when I was younger. I wanted nothing more than to be a parent and a really good one at that. I idolized my parents, even though I knew that they had significant faults. If I could support another person as much as my parents supported me, I thought my life would have been worth it. I think we all crave this it's partially in our dna To seek to propagate the human species and improve upon it at the same time, we desire to be understood by someone just like us to me, having children and being a parent with the ultimate solution to the existential crisis that we're all faced with. What do we do with our lives but our lives me and now everything is changed. I no longer feel this drive to will someone else into the world the world is so messed Why would I want to condemn another to an existence that they didn't ask for and will likely result in deep suffering. The climate crisis paints the future in stark terms, fix it now or suffer dire consequences for generations. It would be insanity to willingly birth a consciousness capable of feeling, pain, as deep as your deepest injuries, sorrow as dark as your darkest days and hopelessness akin to your lowest moments Just think how awful and hopeless you know that it's possible to feel how can we reconcile knowingly condemning someone we're gonna love with all our heart to struggle through disaster. That we could have prevented it and I know I'm not alone in my trepidation. My generation and that below me are the most vocal against having kids the most outspoken against continuing the human project and that in itself should be deeply troubling to anyone who hears it a whole generation of humans are willing to forgo their biological in Is because the world is too screwed up to allow them the chance of permanently ruining the life of an offspring How low have we sunk to exist in a world of this turmoil. How sad we must be to give up a future for another because our own has been ripped from us without our consent. How deft we must be to not listening to not listen to the grieving cries of a generation set up for failure and condemned as fanatical and for listening to science A powerful link resonates from the deepest caverns of my soul because, while I know that this crisis is looming, I also know that there are plenty of things that we could do to prevent the worst from coming sometimes I wish I didn't know this ignorance is of course, bliss right. We must then exist in a society that, through ignorance or feigned, ignorance, a government we live under a government composed of blissful representatives. What the States of our politicians, we may be too scared to absorb and come to grips with this existential threat of climate change is actively robbing me. My entire generation and those who come after me of our present and future freedom. Our country and our representatives are obsessed with freedom the land of the free right life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. These rights are said to be UN alien, a bl well, my first suit of happiness has been gradually torn away from me as I have to watch my planet decay before my eyes year after year I know it's the liberty as a sham is the self proclaimed doctrine of American exceptional ism somehow renders our representatives greedy acceptance of fossil fuel money as a justified action. What perversion of liberty do we live under when the actions of the few can rob them any of their prospects of livable future The policymakers of the so called great nation have ripped from my hands. My desire to bring another life into the world and for what a few millions or thousands of dollars in fossil fuel donations for fear of political recourse and losing a reelection campaign for worry that a Green new deal is too expensive or unknowable or crazy it's a true shame that our political system is so destitute that it cannot muster the courage necessary to face potentially species ending disaster, so A large problem demands an equally large solution. The science is clear and in near unanimous agreement, anything short of courageous political action is unacceptable and people will die as a result of inaction, futures will be ruined if we sit idly by the benefits of fossil fuel donations, pride of winning an election or fear of rocking the establishment vote will seem so small and inconceivable if the future is wrought with climate catastrophe whoo yeah Representative neal and the world this is why I stand up and speak. We can do something about this problem in the process. We can even begin to address the deep inequalities and injustices that exist in our nation and the world as a whole. How could such an appealing prospect be shied away from we are here to ask you to be courageous because we will support you if you support us. I will Not stop standing up and speaking out until I can firmly believe that my children will not grow up in a world with a have to wake up every day and wonder how things were allowed to get so bad Wow that was an extremely powerful speech that was a second one. You heard today. Well, we are out of office in springfield massachusetts out here in the below freezing temperatures in the wind because Rep Richard Neil unfortunately works in a federal courthouse. That only allowed us 10 people into his office. So we set those 10 constituents in to meet with them earlier and they just came back out and they're gonna tell us what happened in the meeting All right so district continues office, we met with one of the staffers and the staffers and fortunately, did not wanna come join. Everybody outside even though there are a lot of constituent voices here. There's, a lot of people who are really passionate about um getting Richard neal to sign on to the Green new deal um. We do appreciate neil's former commitment to are his commitment to other climate policy um but unless he signs the Green new deal, nothing, nothing else scales to the crisis yeah so we think that he needs to hear from some more constituent voices um and then we'll have the story from L I'm leslie I'm probably on massachusetts and one of those constituents and I would change is really important to me. Uh in two thousand 15. I went to wyoming. I spent three weeks backpacking in the wind River mountain range, which is one of the most beautiful place I've ever been, but it's also affected by climate change, despite the fact that no humans live there, that you can spend days in the mountains and not see a trail, a footpath where another human there are no buildings there's. Nothing there Manmade and yet to trees are dying because we have elevated the temperature of the planet. So drastically that the beatles' Reproductive period is so long that their population has grown drastically and they're being abused and wyoming. We don't live there. There is no humans that spend lengthy periods of time. There except for hikers and yet we have such an impact on the forest. There. That was the first time to me that I saw how enormous and devastating our impact is on the environment, but I came home to Western Mass the beautiful burgers that are known for our nature. I noticed that we too have made terrible Hat or environment or rivers are contaminated and there's trash and we also have an indecent beetle species that is hurting our trees. We came here today to ask representative meal to support this deal because it is beautifully Progressive field. They will have to change that. We need to take right now if we don't enact change now our future and our environment and the beautiful nature of this state and this country will be destroyed forever and we won't be able to change it so we are asking them Do this now for us and for your Years old really really afraid of climate change, um so see one song real, quick to the cold up here So we had someone amazingly, we invite the beautiful song. I get by with a little help from my friends, um and we're addressing it to Neil um at the friend of ours and a friend of our constituency and this district we're inviting him with our friends to sign on to the Green new deal so we're gonna sing that come together now Why you I'm friends three What she It Nice to see a lot of Out My friends you I love that rendition uh that's for you read Neil good now we're gonna hear one final story. This is karen she's eighteen years old from Williams town and she shared this in the office. Hi I'm here with carmen and I'm from Williams town mountain Tuesday, which is right on the border of New York state um just 15 minutes away from my House. It was a call where my cousins lived and charming House that looks over this Green luscious tally going up this place was important to me because it was a place where my uncle proposed to my on it was where We had our annual luau is when summer turned into fall and it was the home to these Apple trees that line the driveway in our have the like best tasting and they're really gnarly. But they're delicious most importantly, until ut as Princess or Was it falls, is also the home to see cobain plastics factory which later became responsible replacement of the town's water supply through P F O ways pm away is a chemical which is widely used in nonstick tough bunch and coughs. It stain resistant carpets at least from the state go day after um and continue to monitor Time to drink New York state Department did not conduct a limited study in two thousand 17 which somehow concluded that there was not a statistically significant increase in cancer is in the area. I would like them to say that to judy every underdog forever who would admit, year were all diagnosed with cancer. All of the sudden this home, that had given so much joy to our family is now the That is responsible in a situated. My husband and their dog to suffer from physical, emotional and financial burdens of cancer and it's brought my family and our community in direct or directly in the face of industry made environmental dangers. Despite having their own 100 eighty foot well and being miles away from the Center of town um, their water was contaminated Growing up in a pretty environmentally conscious place I remember thinking that number one. This happen being confused, but assure that people would be held accountable, since then, with the intersections between corporate greed and political complacency resulting and entirely preventable human made environmental dangers has haunted me and our country. I read about flint with the politicians in power were directly responsible for poisoning an entire city I've. I read about Tracking um countrywide, which contaminated the water so much that people can literally write light. It on fire and today I read about senators on the other Coast to dismiss their youth constituents reasoning that their record of incremental environmental policy, which they have an active during decades in office, is enough and sufficient for now meal. Your constituents, your youth and your country need environmental steps to be taken The environmental urgency means up today we're trying to do our part. Um if you want an example of growing new commitment to environmental issues, together, I'm, a member of the s close out my school, where we work with the administration and students to make our school more sustainable. Last year, we transition to a new school and we have solar panels, beautiful apples little electricity for the cars and we transition from metal Super art to Everywhere from class to silverware and we work with recycling um, a couple of years ago. There was a handful of members and now there are 50 and the school said it about This shows the commitment that people have to environmental issues, but our cycling is important, but can only do so much Neil. You have the power to make a statement by Co sponsoring the Green new deal You have the power being the last person in massachusetts to Co sponsor. You have the power to make our state the first one to help full support of the resolution My cousin's battle with cancer forced me to confront environmental dangers on a personal level and taught me firsthand how these dangerous do not listen to borders and have pervasive effects on towns communities, countries and the world by the catastrophes don't respect state borders were taught me that we need an environmental gestures um which are on a National level and, unlike that of what we have done in the past and attack Climate change has an issue with undeniable social, economic and environmental intersection. Oo presentation and Co sponsoring stems from the fear of losing Committee positions or not. Having full support of your constituents were here. Having driven an hour and a half to stand outside in this beautiful 20 degree weather to Co sponsor the Green new deal because we are terrified for not just terrified because extreme weather across the country is no longer just a Dream and is now expected we're terrified because right now my cousins and their dog are suffering Cancer in the same Earth that produces those delicious Green apples lining their driveway is laced with stuff away. The only way we can convince these larger than life and environmental dangerous is with something that is both ambitious and broad meal. You have the power in your district facebook and all of us and the people in the future are watching and hoping to make the right decision That was another one of right niels constituents telling amazingly powerful story about why she is out here fighting for her future right. Neil. We brought 65 your constituents out to demand that you caused to sponsor the Green new deal we're out here in the below freezing temperatures in the wind just fighting for our futures. We're living in an unstable environment when that will not be able to Harbor human life in years to come and have a society is about change almost like fast, dramatic changes to how we live and work in a little bit all the Green new deal is what we need to enact these changes without knowing the full of furniture too long and we only have about a decade to fix the mess we created if you did not, personally affect climate change in your daily life. Species, melts Sea levels rise temperatures change. You may not be personally affected by National disasters and ecological crises at the moment around the world are suffering because of these events.
