May 17, 2018 Statement regarding Kyle Hotel fire on May 16, 2018

The 911 call for a fire at the Kyle Hotel came into the local fire department at 17:21, local volunteer fire fighters were dispatched and arrived on scene at 17:30.
When the members arrived they found the basement of the building filled with smoke. Members entered the building, but could not locate the source of the fire due to excess smoke and heat.
Mutual aid was requested from the Elrose Fire Department a...s well as the Beechy Fire Department due to the risk of exposure of adjacent structures.
Assisting were members of the Kyle Colony who suppled water trucks. Water trucks were also supplied by local farmers.
It was determined that an interior attack was unsafe for members to proceed. Members concentrated on adjacent buildings. High winds caused difficulty protecting exposures.
We would like to thank all members from Elrose, Beechy and Kyle Colony for their help in assisting Kyle with this incident as well as all local volunteers that helped in any way.
The cause of the fire is undetermined but the fire originated in the basement of the hotel.
Members were still at the scene as of noon on May 17, 2018.

George Akister – Fire Chief
Doug Barker – Mayor

We were coming home from Swift Current and heard the call of the Kyle hotel being on fire. I contacted KFD and asked if they needed help. I assisted Kyle FC wit...h Command dressed in shorts and tshirt. Beechy Command and two FFs brought turnout gear for me and radios for more Comms. Elrose Fire provided mutual aid. We managed to keep the loss to the hotel, with some minor damage to other buildings. 70-80 kph winds so we were fortune to limit damage to other buildings. Tremendous radiant heat. No injuries all FFs safe.
