Cook County Board finance committee votes to repeal beverage tax 15-1.
Deborah Sims (D-5) said "86% of her district constituents do not want the tax" so she "reluctantly supports the repeal" - her exact words.
Larry Suffredin (D-13) voted AGAINST the repeal.
Jerry Butler was absent.
Cook County now taxes sweetened beverages at a rate FOURTEEN TIMES HIGHER than they tax beer.
Illinois State Senators McCarter and McConchie unveil 'Taxpayer Bargain' - Highlights: balances the budget with no tax increase; penalizes legislator pay if FY18 spending exceeds revenue; spending reductions of 10 percent at state agencies and 5 percent at universities; retailers discount rate for sales tax collections reduced from 1.75% to 1%; funding for elementary and secondary education is protected as are Medicaid services for the most vulnerable and scheduled pension payments.
