I just wanted to take a moment to recognise the impact of the bushfi...res here in Australia. Impact ranges from evacuation of homes in fire affected areas, to sheltering on beaches wrapped in wet towels to avoid the flames, being responsible for the care of injured wildlife, being responsible for the care of wildlife carers, fighting the fires in person, having family members fighting the fires in person and friends/family losing homes and lives. This list is not exhaustive by any means. All of us feel overwhelmed. This is not a normal state of affairs. What practical help looks like at this stage is still being determined. What we can do RIGHT NOW is that we can be incredibly mindful that there are people that are hurting, that need our kindness and our support. I know that once the immediacy of the fires resolves, we will need to be proactive in supporting people as they begin the long, slow, rebuild of human lives, communities and animal habitats. The impact will not vanish magically once it vanishes from the news or as soon as we see blue skies instead of smoke haze. Trauma has a permanent effect on people and it takes time to process the emotional, mental and physical effects. The fact that we are only one month into summer indicates that sadly, there will be more of us affected. So please, take the time to check in with people. Look out for opportunities to support them and most of all, be gentle with yourselves and with others. This is a time for our humanity to shine. For kindness to be our default. It is also however, a time for us to be very vocal in demanding more of our country's leadership, maintaining the rage that we feel as we helplessly scroll through the news, hoping for the best even as we read about the worst. Apathy can not prevail. For then nothing changes. Go gently but resolutely. x See More
