The fundamental concept: “bet on the jockey, not the horse.”

...

"Next time you’re at a networking event, by all means pitch yourself first before pitching your business! Rather, make as much of a humanly connection with others as you can, as this will be the ultimate determining factor whether or not you will have gained a meaningful relationship and not just another business card."

Among the hundreds of content channels I regularly consume, Tea Time with Tara stands out as uniquely refreshing. Each "kettle" comes with a list of bite-sized insights that are as thought-provoking a...s they are concise. I especially appreciate how much of the writer's personality shines through - each piece is authentic and unassuming, framed by her personal experiences as a serial entrepreneur. See More

On adaptability and how crucial it is for the VERY near future (btw I 💙 Shane Parrish - author of Farnam Street Blog) -

"Like you, I have to compete in a global world. I doubt I’m ever going to own a lot of quality land or natural resources so I’m placing my focus on intellectual property, good ideas, and unique skills. But how?

By focusing on what’s scarce today and tomorrow. That means I have to learn how to do difficult things — things that other people value, things othe...r people can’t do. This isn’t as easy as it sounds.

What I really need to develop is not so much the specific traits that will be valued as much as a system to constantly reinvent myself and adapt.

This is the hard part and in an odd way, I need to go backwards to go forward. I need to develop skills I once had that I’ve lost: The ability to read better, the ability to make better decisions, the ability to focus, and strategies to make sure I’m not consumed by busywork.

These are the skills that will enable me to have quality ideas that other people don’t have.

More than these skills, however, I need to find a personal operating system that helps me overcome adversity and reduce my ego.

These are the foundational skills that underpin adaptability. I’m never going to be the most intelligent person but I can sure as hell work on my ability to adapt quickly."

I’ve came across this before but a friend just shared it again and I felt it’s one of the best refreshers we need in our fast moving lives:

Only Those Who Are Committed Succeed

“Being ambitious isn’t honorable. Wanting more for your life is a common desire....
But being completely committed to something is not common. It’s rare. It’s rare because commitment requires, in the words of T.S. Eliot, “nothing short of everything.”

The hardest thing you will give up is the false idea of what you think you are.You have no clue what you are. More importantly, there is no “you” that is fixed and permanent, only the individualistic idea you have of yourself.

This “authentic” self is your worst enemy. It’s the excuse you have for not evolving. It’s your justification for not committing to something bigger and better. It’s the chain around your neck, stopping you from putting yourself into situations that will demand you become a better version of you.”

This is an on point explanation of how art and poetry helps us break from routine while being able to define what we want to express: "The daily routine of most adults is so heavy and artificial that we are closed off to much of the world. We have to do this in order to get our work done. I think one purpose of art is to get us out of those routines.

When we hear music or poetry or stories, the world opens up again. We’re drawn in — or out — and the windows of our perception... are cleansed, as William Blake said. The same thing can happen when we’re around young children or adults who have unlearned those habits of shutting the world out.

One of the functions of art is to give people the words to know their own experience. There are always areas of vast silence in any culture, and part of an artist’s job is to go into those areas and come back from the silence with something to say.

It’s one reason why we read poetry, because poets can give us the words we need. When we read good poetry, we often say, ‘Yeah, that’s it. That’s how I feel.’"

Such a great episode republished today. Puts a lot into perspective of how quick we may be living our lives and missing out the benefits of slowing....down...once...in....a...while 😉😊

Adam Grant’s 5 minutes of it was the best (not only because I think he’s amazing as is) as well as Andy’s part (the creator of Headspace) on his take on slowing down and happiness.

Take a break from music and listen to these! So interesting 😊👌🏻

A must-read for everyone interested in understanding blockchain, bitcoin, and other cryptocurrencies...it's a long read but very fascinating how blockchain could apply to everything outside of just finance. 😳

See below for just one scenario:

"The true test of the blockchain will revolve — like so many of the online crises of the past few years — around the problem of identity. Today your digital identity is scattered across dozens, or even hundreds, of different sites: Amazon... has your credit-card information and your purchase history; Facebook knows your friends and family; Equifax maintains your credit history. When you use any of those services, you are effectively asking for permission to borrow some of that information about yourself in order perform a task: ordering a Christmas present for your uncle, checking Instagram to see pictures from the office party last night. But all these different fragments of your identity don’t belong to you; they belong to Facebook and Amazon and Google, who are free to sell bits of that information about you to advertisers without consulting you.

You, of course, are free to delete those accounts if you choose, and if you stop checking Facebook, Zuckerberg and the Facebook shareholders will stop making money by renting out your attention to their true customers. But your Facebook or Google identity isn’t portable. If you want to join another promising social network that is maybe a little less infected with Russian bots, you can’t extract your social network from Twitter and deposit it in the new service. You have to build the network again from scratch (and persuade all your friends to do the same).

The blockchain evangelists think this entire approach is backward. You should own your digital identity — which could include everything from your date of birth to your friend networks to your purchasing history — and you should be free to lend parts of that identity out to services as you see fit. Given that identity was not baked into the original internet protocols, and given the difficulty of managing a distributed database in the days before Bitcoin, this form of “self-sovereign” identity — as the parlance has it — was a practical impossibility. Now it is an attainable goal."

Wow...just wow 😳🙌👏 -
"This week, Canva announced a $40 million founding round making its founder, Melanie Perkins, 30, perhaps the youngest female CEO to be leading a $1 billion startup.
...
Perkins and Lake remain the exception. Only about 6% of senior venture capitalists are female (down from 10% since 1999) and just 2.7% of venture-backed startups have female CEOs...Since 2000, the share of IPOs led by female CEOs in the US has averaged around 5%. Partly to blame are struc...tural barriers arrayed against women, outright sexism, and a misogynistic work culture."

Great Sunday read

"It’s so easy to dream.

It’s easy to tell people about your ambitions. It’s easy to create vision boards and write down your goals. It’s easy to stand in front of a mirror and declare affirmations.

...

And that’s where most people stop.

The very act of dreaming stops you from achieving your dreams.

The ability to perform deep work is becoming increasingly rare at exactly the same time it is becoming increasingly valuable in our economy. As a consequence, the few who cultivate this skill, and then make it the core of their working life, will thrive.”

Happy New Years!! 🥂😊 Let's make sure we start the year being true to ourselves! This article can help.
One of my favorite articles on authenticity - many times I find myself doing things that don't feel authentic to being myself and recognizing this, I have to tune into what I truly want to do, not what others want. Don't get caught up being someone you're not, it's one of the top 5 things people regret on their deathbed!!

Basel week was intense. I have had so many interactions with very interesting and wise people that I need to still process and turn into articles of insights ;p

Meanwhile, this will take you guys 2 minutes to look over - nice little refresher. #'s 15, 16, & 27 were my favorite:

15. Nearly everybody is “juicing.” They’re making themselves sick trying to catch up with one another....
16. Thus, your challenge is to catch up with your self.
27. What you think is a personality flaw may just be the bad influence of the place where you live.

Newest piece just published 😊🙌🏼📝

I've been playing around with this idea of boredom for a while now and think that I finally captured what I wanted to - would ❤️ your 💭s!

"We are caught in a net of the shallow surface of our minds with a never-ending, unexplored, ocean below us. Boredom is a fuel that pushes us to explore the caves of our minds....
...
I am not sure if this is only my own experience, but I walk around seeing people with no depth, no character. A loss of originality seems to have surfaced where I find less and less people making any impression on me, but rather, more and more meshing into a blurred general pawn of society."
