Three minutes at the LFP Pilot on 8/1/18...

Went by at 1:30 to put in a few items Lisa Darling, Realtor collected through her food drive for LFP. (flyer, photo one; items donated by one neighborhood, photo two)

A woman was already there. I stayed in my car while she put a few things in the LFP, took a few items of clothing out of The Little Free Toy Box. Another car pulled up behind mine, and two kids got out with a bag full of snacks. I got out, too, and asked the kids to help me with the things I'd brought. I said, "Thank you for giving to the LFP." The oldest, a girl, said, "We do this all the time."

Three cars in three minutes. I drove by an hour later and most of the items pictured in photo three were gone.

Thank you, Lisa. Thank you to the neighbors who donated. Thank you to the woman. Thank you to the two kids and their mom. Thank you to whoever came along after us and shared in the gift of LFP.

"Help another. Help yourself." Help Shelf Tallahassee, launched by Leadership Tallahassee, cut ribbons on four Tallahassee, Florida, locations this past Sunday with more on the way. Sarah Howard, project co-chair, writes for Tallahassee Democrat: "Almost half the people served by Second Harvest of the Big Bend [Tallahassee's central food bank] have some income, whether via low wages or Social Security, yet are unable to cover basic food costs. Food insecurity runs rampant in every quadrant of our city, exemplified by the hundreds of people who start lining up at least two hours before Second Harvest's six mobile food pantries open up. The level of need in our community is simply staggering." This group is SO needed, SO organized, and SO fun! From their participation in Tally SOUP (Tallahassee's Detroit SOUP event, which THEY WON!) to their recent "Cocktails for Cans" event (hosted by friends Madison Social, Centrale Pizza Parm & Bar, and Township Tallahassee), this group and its project is one to watch. Thank you, Leadership Tallahassee and Help Shelf Tallahassee for being a vibrant presence in your community.

Today is International Women's Day. Seems fitting to share a little iMovie I made about the Solidarity Sisters’ project, as the group is all about authenticity and empowerment. You’ll see men in the video, but these women built this project mostly on their own (with a little help from one of Northwest Arkansas Fab Lab’s volunteers.) I am so grateful to have been asked to participate in the build, final project located on Fayetteville, AR’s, trail system, hosted by South Creekside Apartments. I am so grateful for the opportunity to meet these people. Solidarity Sister, Renata Shelton, said: “We have to release the giving. The point was to empower ourselves, trust each other, and trust that others can help us in our giving, in our need, in our hardship, and in our journey.”

Yesterday, Hamilton Helping Hands - Free Little Pantry asked its community to remember its local bricks and mortar food pantries need continued support. Thank you to HHH for this reminder.

And thank you to these emergency food service providers. LFP fills gaps between bricks and mortar, but their walls provide stability we cannot. Thank you.

Here are two really-easy-to-implement project upgrades!

St. Luke’s Episcopal-Curritick County, NC, uses chalkboard paint to communicate.

Gibbon's Little Free Pantry implemented a different but just as easy communication strategy. It installed a dropbox to accept drawing entries, special needs and prayer requests. Note cards are available inside the pantry. ❤️

"The only clothes I have is what I have on," he said. "And luckily I just got two pairs of pants. This means a lot. It really does. It really means a lot. It means a lot to me."

He said it four times. Thank you, Little Free Pantry : Austin, Tx, for being there for Victor and for all your neighbors.

Check out the story below. (The colorful project in photo 2 is the latest version.)

“I felt such a warm connection to him.” Friends of the LFP making friends at the LFP.

Pantry Stories

Last week I was watering out front and a young man stopped to talk. He told me his name was Frank and he lived with his mother and his uncle. His father had died earlier and the family was having a hard time. He said he stopped at the pantry every day to just get a few things. It was important to him to tell me he never took everything. He always leaves something for others. He spoke a lot about God. He shared how many miles he rides on his bike every day. He thanked me over and over for having the pantry in my yard. I saw him again this morning from my kitchen window. He showed up just 15 minutes after I put food in the box. I felt such a warm connection to him. I wish you had a pantry in your yard.

New Zealanders are putting a fresh spin on the concept!

Mark Dennis shared the bounty from his Auckland garden. Now, lots of others are doing the same. Projects prioritize stocking vegetables, fruits, and eggs. Dennis says, "It's for everybody. It's not just the needy. If you see something you like, help yourself. It's all food that would otherwise be going to waste."

In addition to LOTS of Free Tiny Pantries, the group hosts Tiny Diaper Pantry outside a homeless shelter for pregnant women, Tiny Pet Pantry outside a local animal shelter, and is about to add Little Free Library to its lineup of tinys!

Please see the FTPN page (linked in comments) for more information and a Google map of locations. And if you or folks you know live in the Lansing area, please share the page! Spread the good word!

Special thanks to all involved, especially to Mike Karl. Thank you for this labor of love.
