Today, Cherokee Nation Principal Chief Chuck Hoskin Jr., Cherokee Nation First Lady January Hoskin and Cherokee National Treasure Tommy Wildcat joined Preservation Virginia (along with the OU College of Law and the Virginia Museum of History & Culture) for the "John Marshall, the Supreme Court & the Trail of Tears" symposium. Chief Hoskin explained to nearly 200 attendees how the Cherokee Nation survived the hardships of forced removal and rebuilt in what is now Oklahoma. He ...also highlighted how Justice Marshall's decisions still impact Native peoples.

Chief Hoskin was one of several speakers, including former Cherokee Nation At-Large Tribal Councilor and President of the Trail of Tears Association, Jack Baker; Professor Lindsay G. Robertson from the University of Oklahoma; Dr. Kevin Butterfield, with George Washington's Mount Vernon; Dr. Edward Ayers, President Emeritus, University of Richmond; and Chief Emeritus Kenneth Adams, of the Upper Mattaponi Indian Tribe.

After the symposium, a tour and dinner were held at the John Marshall house in Richmond, Virginia. The tour included a look at Justice Marshall's robe and many of his family's household items that are on display.

Chief Hoskin also caught up with members of the Washington, D.C., area Cherokee community group, who attended the symposium.
