    The Fuzz Drivers - The Fuzz Drivers (Self Titled)

    Hailing from Portugal, The Fuzz Drivers, born in 2010, released their first full length self-titled album in 2013. The album has nine tracks and is roughly 38 minutes of listening time. The... band describes themselves as pure rock’n’roll. They have a hard influence from southern rock and softer influences of 60’s and 70’s classic rock and hard rock. The Fuzz Drivers are composed of Marcelo as vocals, Duarte on drums, Joao on bass, and Sergio on guitar. Their band influences include the likes of Led Zeppelin, ZZ Top, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Pink Floyd. They are under record label Ripple Music. They also describe themselves has having strong melodies and meaningful lyrics.

    The Fuzz Drivers are a classic / southern rock band. If you don’t like this kind of rock, you will not enjoy this album. I, however, find it quite enjoyable. The vocal presence is top notch. This type of rock puts a lot of focus on vocals, and Marcelo owns it. It has a little bit of a uniqueness to it that differentiates it from the rest of the pack, but definitely keeps it in the genre.

    There is a little bit of choppiness in the album, but it isn’t anything that throws the flow off too badly. The worse of it comes in ‘The Poet and The Thief’. The drums in the beginning with the vocals seem disorganized. However, later in the song, the drums make a huge impact and sound wonderful. The guitars are low but have some great solos throughout. They are the classic southern rock style.

    ‘In to the Sun’ has some phenomenal bass and drum work. This is one reason I like southern rock so much; there is a lot of emphasis on the bass and drums. Where in much of rock and metal the guitars get all the attention, it’s nice to have that differing sound every once in a while. I think people forget how beautiful the sound of a bass can be (this coming from someone who played the double bass). This is by far my favorite song on the album. I love hearing the guitar mimic the bass.

    I give The Fuzz Drivers a 7.5/10. It is a solid southern rock album. There is a bit of choppiness, but really, that is to be expected from a first album. If you like the sound of southern rock, this is a good album to pick up.
