The Lancet Neurology | Review | Neuromodulation in the restoration of function after spinal cord injury

Read the review: https://hubs.ly/H0dSmQx0

Neuromodulation, the use of electrical interfaces to alter neuronal activity, has been successful as a treatment approach in several neurological disorders, including deep brain stimulation for Parkinson's disease and epidural spinal stimulation for chronic pain. Neuromodulation can also be beneficial for spinal cord injury, from as...sisting basic functions such as respiratory pacing and bladder control, through to restoring volitional movements and skilled hand function. Approaches range from electrical stimulation of peripheral muscles, either directly or via brain-controlled bypass devices, to stimulation of the spinal cord and brain. Limitations to widespread clinical application include durability of neuromodulation devices, affordability and accessibility of some approaches, and poor understanding of the underlying mechanisms. Efforts to overcome these challenges through advances in technology, together with pragmatic knowledge gained from clinical trials and basic research, could lead to personalised neuromodulatory interventions to meet the specific needs of individuals with spinal cord injury.

Sobering news from #NCDCountdown, our project with The Lancet, World Health Organization (WHO) and Imperial College London. We've just released the 1st article,... showing that less than 1/2 of countries are on track to reduce premature deaths from #NCDs by 1/3 by 2030. http://bit.ly/CDLancet

Cancers, cardiovascular diseases, chronic respiratory diseases and diabetes were responsible for 12.5 million deaths among people aged 30-70 years worldwide in 2016 #enoughNCDs

Infographic: Tuberculosis and diabetes 15% of tuberculosis cases worldwide are attributable to diabetes. This infographic illustrates how increasing diabetes prevalence is threatening to hinder progress in global tuberculosis control. A Series of three papers in The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology examines the intersection between tuberculosis and diabetes from several angles, and outlines strategies that will be key to managing and ultimately reducing this dual disease burden.
