NEW: Police dogs bite thousands of Americans each year, inflicting serious injuries. Occasionally, they kill people. Their bites can cut through sheet metal.
The dogs are bred to catch people. And there is little oversight of how police depts. use them.
We obtained dog-bite data from police depts. around the country. We examined more than 140 individual bite cases nationwide, and reviewed thousands of documents, including excessive force lawsuits and videos of police dog bites.
A vast majority of people in jail never lost the right to vote, despite believing otherwise. Felony disenfranchisement laws and misinformation lead many people in jail to believe they cannot vote.
