Exactly forty years ago today (April 4th),
Our record Matchstalk Men went to Number One in the UK charts.
The record had slipped from 3 to 4 the previous week. We later learned it was because of a discrepancy in the sales count due to the Easter holiday. In those days all the shops were closed. Mick & me were already in London as we were doing the London Palladium that night. This historic clip shows our MD Mike Timoney & Tintwistle Band, and comic Dudley Doolittle (sitting next to Dad), on the coach to London to do the show with us. They were listening to the chart countdown on Radio One (Paul Burnette). They thought the song had dropped out of the Top 10 completely.
This very moment they hear we were Number One was captured by Auntie Elsie on her 8mm cine camera.
