Fridays With Freddy

Dear Miss Ozzie

I’m on my way.

...

Freddy

PS. The boudoir looks much as I remember, with the exception of the two albino poodles occupying the spot to which I’ve become accustomed. It should go without saying, but in the interest of clarity, please know that I’m absolutely fine with their presence, and look forward to introducing myself to them in the usual fashion - under your close supervision, naturally.

PPS. If those poodles are stuffed, I don't want to know.

I am not one to say “I told you so,” but if I were, this would be a swell time to do it. A very smart man named James Piereson has not only written an excellent article in The Wall St. Journal debunking a few of the many flaws in “free college for all,” he has quoted yours truly not once, but twice. http://www.wsj.com/…/clinton-should-listen-to-kaine-on-voca…. This, as my father just informed me, would seem to indicate that I have not been talking exclusively to myself for th...e last eight years.

Modesty aside, it’s very flattering to learn that someone with actual qualifications and genuine bona fides not only agrees with me, but quotes me in one of the best opinion pieces I’ve ever read on education. No one genuinely concerned by the advent of a two-tiered economy can read this article and conclude that “free college for everyone” is prudent, or even realistic. The author also points out, quite rightly in my view, that skilled labor could play a role in determining the outcome of this election. Closing the skills gap is massive issue that neither candidate currently owns. It should be a non-partisan topic, but that word no longer applies to, well…anything. It’ll be interesting to see which side makes it theirs.

Regardless, I’ll be here, trying real hard not to say…you know…

Oh, Mike. You tell a beautiful story as always. Unfortunately, for me, it was marred by your dig against the vet's fee for Freddy's dental surgery. It's disheartening to hear a champion for hard working Americans discount the value of medical care for your beloved Freddy.

Heavy is the Head that Wears the Crown…

According to Dr. Derek, it was a tiny bit of bacteria that caused the problem. Somehow, it wormed its way under my crown and waged a holy war against the remains of my original tooth, impervious to the manmade enhancement which has protected it all these years. Alas, times change, and The Second Law of Thermodynamics will not be denied. Things fall apart, the centre cannot hold. Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world, etc.

Funny, how en...amel, cold and lifeless, is surrounded by the softest of tissue, and the tenderest of nerves.

Funny, how something we rely upon every day, can be so easily forgotten, and so painfully recalled.

Funny, how such a little thing - a microscopic thing - can worm its way into the nooks and crannies of our system, hollowing us out from the inside, leaving naught behind but blackness and rot.

Maybe it’s the novocain - or more likely the post-procedural mimosas to which I feel entitled - but it occurs to me that our country is not unlike the remains of my molar - still there, but very much under siege, and ever more susceptible to decay. It's been protected for years by a manmade cover, but now, the cover needs to be replaced. And that's gonna hurt.

Mike

PS. Floss, friends. Floss.

Good Evening

For those of you with better things to do than watch a four-minute video of me thanking Angela Phillips for bidding $15,575.00 for Donald Trump’s autographed bathrobe, please take a fraction of a second to read the following sentence, written with all the genuine sincerity I can muster.

Thanks, Angela.

...

100% of Angela's money goes to work-ethic scholarships, and I promise it will be well-spent. I’d like to also thank everyone else who bid, as well as Donald Trump for taking an interest in our foundation. I’m grateful.

Also, I’m aware that most of you can’t drop that kind of coin on autographed lounge-wear, so keep in mind the various other pieces of C.R.A.P. (Collectibles, Rare And Precious,) that benefit the foundation. Specifically, a new batch of Mike and Freddy talking bobbleheads guaranteed to class-up your home. http://www.bobbleheads.com/products.html….

They’re only $29.99, and no one will out bid anyone, promise. See the video for further details.

Thanks-
Mike

Barbara Pearlman Wells writes…

Hello, Mike Rowe! Whether or not you support her candidacy, I wonder if you were pleased that Hillary Clinton specifically mentioned in her acceptance speech that we need training for skills and trades in addition to traditional college. Thought of you and your foundation immediately. Thanks for all you do. Barbara

Kyle Graham to Mike Rowe

Hello Mr. Rowe. I'm not sure if you'll ever read this but I just wanted to share my own "dirty job" with you. Last year when I was 12, I started my own pooper scooper business called Call of Doodie. Your show was a big inspiration for my idea. I've earned enough money already to buy my own fishing boat.

...

I just wanted to thank you so much for the inspiration to get out there and get my hands dirty! It would mean the world to me to know you read this, so please, please say hello!

Here's a link to my company's website in case you were feeling really generous and wanted to pose for a picture with my website in the background:

Kyle - You sir, are inspiration, and proof-positive that when it comes to #2, somebody's gotta be #1.

Carry on,
Mike

Off the Wall

Mike - if an impromptu homage to Tennessee Ernie Ford raised the bid by $4,000, what about a dramatic Shakespearian monologue while wearing the robe in question? According to your bio, you were quite the thespian, once upon a time. What do you say?

PS. Don’t forget to include Freddy. It’s possible the people bidding on this thing are more enamored of your dog than the Republican nominee. Just sayin…

...

Standing by,
Denise K.

Hi Denise -

My Shakespeare’s a bit rusty, but your request does put me in mind of Cyrano de Bergerac’s famous rejoinder to La Bret. When Cyrano is challenged to compromise his artistic integrity in order to live a more comfortable life, his short answer was “no thank you.” But Rostand made his “long answer” a lot more interesting, in what has always been one of my favorite literary rants. (Forgive the translation. My French is terrible.)

PS. You’re probably right - I have no idea how Freddy would fare in a pole (or a poll,) against either candidate, but I wouldn’t bet against him. Besides, there’s something pleasantly confusing about a middle-aged man in a ball cap, wrapped in a robe signed by a billionaire, ranting about the dangers of artistic compromise while sipping champagne and holding a lap dog for charity. N’est ce pas? http://www.ebay.com/itm/262539612279

Off The Wall

Dear Mike - You likened your fundraising efforts in a previous post to a “perpetual telethon.” Might one conclude from that characterization the advent of some entertainment on this page? Speaking only for myself, I might be more inclined to bid on Donald Trump’s autographed bathrobe if you were to sing me a song. No guarantees - $11,000 for a bathrobe worn by a guy I’m not even voting for is pretty rich. But your cause is just, and I’m in the mood for a melody.

...Warmly,
Donna Dixon

PS. I’d like to see Freddy as well. His absence on Friday’s has left a crater in my soul.

PPS. Also, I’d like to see you wearing the robe as you sing, and not over your street clothes. If I wind up owning the damn thing, I’d like to know that you were the last one to wear it, however briefly. http://www.ebay.com/itm/262539612279

Hi Donna
You request is reasonable, albeit a little weird. And the robe, in case you're wondering, is not only luxurious, it's 100% deductible.

A quick announcement from the Time Out Corner. As many of you know, several live shows were on the books for the end of September. Two of those shows - Chicago and New York - have been canceled. Baltimore is still on, and a few good seats are still left.

Good reasons sound too much like bad excuses, so I’ll spare you the details. I’ll be back, just as soon as time permits. For now, there's little I can do but apologize, and hope that canceling this far in advance wont screw... up anyone's plans too badly. The promoter told me that people rarely travel for events like this, but if any of you have lost money on non-refundable flights or hotels, please drop me a line, at info@mikeroweWORKS.com. I'd like to see what can be done to make it better.

Thanks,

Mike
