Wow! I was on a rare visit to NY, had Sunday evening free and was very happy to get the opportunit y to take in "Measure for Measure", which I had read but never before seen. It was -- on the whole -- ...very well done and the ending with [spoiler alerts!] Angelo's repentance and pardon, Isabella's silence and ultimate consent to marriage made much more sense than I expected them to. I very much appreciate d the diversity of casting and accents and thought the characteri zations were all strong. [Angelo was not done like Trump, thank goodness, that would be too obvious a choice. This was more Nixonian, which worked]. The comic relief and subplots were handled well and seemed very much in the spirit of the play, which is *not* a tragedy though it has moments of intense drama. I must say, though, I didn't really care for the "pre-show" business -- even if the people behind me weren't chattering away and another fellow talking on his phone, it didn't really serve any useful purpose, especially when I then had to sit in the theatre for 15-20 minutes before the start of the play. But it was a small fault and did not diminish my satisfacti on with the perfomance . See More

Measure for Measure with my 3rd experience at Theatre for a New Audience, and it did not disappoint . Jonathan Cake is one of my favorite Shakespear ean actors, and it was wonderful seeing him kill it i...n this role. TFANA always has lively production s, very heartfelt and sincere. I appreciate their lack of pretension , and at the same time, their respect for Shakespear e's words. I would recommend this theater to anyone. See More

I've seen many wonderful production s at TFANA. Measure for Measure, however, wasn't one of them. A lot of the actors seemed to be straining to connect with the text and with each other, which led to ...dead spots in the performanc e. I didn't particular ly believe or care about the characters and wasn't drawn into the story, which should have been compelling . If this had been a college production , I wouldn't be this harsh; this production was at a school level, and not worthy of TFANA. Shakespear e is usually very difficult to handle, even for actors with a lot of classical training. I'm afraid this cast was lacking and so was the direction. See More

This place was awesome. The play was amazing. The actors did a good job while performing . I recommend people to go here. Hint Hint Wink Wink, just a heads up before you watch the show you have an opti...on to go through a brothel. If you don't you can walk right up the stairs. See More

The ticket price of $80 to $90 is discounted down to $20 for anyone under 30 or students of any age. But, seniors are only eligible for mailing list discount tickets at $65. This is an ageist policy ...and completely inequitabl e. I guess the only segment of our society people can treat unfairly without fear of retributio n are seniors. NOT FAIR! See More

Caught the final performanc e of Tamburlain e, first time at this theater. Absolutely brilliant. The physical space of the very theater is exceptiona l: the box brings audience and actors together in a w...ay I had never experience d before; the view provided when exiting the box for intermissi on cleanses the mind, and prepares it for what is to come next. My only complaint, no prosecco, but a not terrible brut. %^) Not only am I eagerly awaiting the next show in March, but next season. See More

TFNA is my absolute favorite theatre company in NYC. Each and every production that I have ever seen there has been an example of impeccable interpreta tion and artistic collaborat ion. I feel like time... and time again I am seeing masterpiec e after masterpiec e. Truly some of the best quality theatre in the world happens here. See More

It was my first time to this theater and it was amazing! The cafe was great, the decor was great, and the play "Master of Two Servants" was absolutely hysterical . The audience laughed constantly throu...gh the entire piece. My face hurt. I'll definitely go back. See More

I witnessed Dianne Wiest play Beckett's alternatel y optimistic and blithely fatalistic Winnie with comic tenderness . She unraveled pretenses from the detritus of ordinary human confusion- -and finds un...iversal revelation . The production convinced me that Samuel Beckett belongs with Shakespear e and a few others whose literary work requires every generation ’s attention. See More

Beware of the side balcony seats in this theatre. They are obstructed views of the stage. You are staring into a bank of lights and only see half the stage. You need to lean forward to see all of the ...stage. They consider them full price seats, but I bet none of the theatre company principals sat in these seats for a performanc e, especially a three hour performanc e. Also, the railing in front of the seats is flimsy. Not a good design. We walked out without seeing the show because they would not give us other seats with a better view. Not likely to return. gmathias See More

One of the most beautiful theaters in New York, presenting consistent ly excellent, thought-pr ovoking old work in fresh stagings. Would that I were under 30 and could score those sweet, sweet $20 tickets!

Love this theater and have never been disappoint ed from the very first production . "Skin of our Teeth" was excellent. Amazing staging (as usual), a fine cast (Mary Wiseman is a star in the making) and... a tale very relevant today See More

Absolutely terrific piece of theatre. Taymor's imaginativ e production creates original jaw-droppi ng moments throughout the entire nearly three hours. All of which serve the play unflinchin gly. The bra...nd spanking new stage space begins as a gleaming black area that turns into a rubix cube of trap doors and elevators that swallow and engorge fairies and real folk with such astonishin g wit you want to leap up and be a part of the fun. Most charming is a phalanx of kids who become whatever is needed to make the production soar that isn't accomplish ed with ropes and brilliant projection s and miles of fabric. Every actor is a joy. The play is an utter joy to be a part of. See More

THE SHANNON and The Killer (I love the word GOBSMACKED )
Seeing the play The Killer a few Sundays ago, made me think, a lot (something I try to do rarely, or it just never stops!)...
Anyway, I've already commented on how amazing and mind bending the play itself was.
But then my thoughts drifted to......Mi chael Jordan.
(Can't wait to see where this is going, right?)
Years ago, I scored tickets to a Knicks Bulls game at The Garden. Jordan was playing.
Well, he wasn't playing, he was dominating !
It was like he had a light from within that just radiated outward.
It struck me as I watched him, mesmerized , I am seeing, I am witnessing , the person that is the BEST at this, this, THING he does.He has reached the pinnacle. There is no one better at THIS than him.
I was gobsmacked .
What a weird, simple thought. But so profound all at once. Imagine being the best, I mean really the best at something, anything, in this universe!
I took that thought home with me, and it's crawled back into my conscience at other times in my life since, but never with the power it did when I saw MJ beat the Knicks at The Garden that night.
Well, that is, until I saw Michael Shannon a couple of Sundays ago in The Killer.
There it was again.
Boom.
This guy is the BEST at this, thing HE does, and I get to see it. Live! I'm a lifelong New Yorker. I've seen plays, musicals, bands. You know the drill. But Shannon? In this play?
C'mon.
He's the greatest actor of my generation .
He's the BEST at what he does.
Gobsmacked again.
I'm pretty lucky I've been privileged enough to see these things I have.
I can tell my cats and they can tell their cats and their cat's-cats ........
Alright, I don't have kids, but you get the point.
Go see this and watch a guy do a thing better than anyone else in this universe.
It's so good.
HE'S so good it hurts.
Michael Shannon must suck at every thing else he does. I mean he has to, no? No one can be that good at something and still be good at anything else,
Shit. Maybe. See More

This was a winning year for the TFANA. Each performanc e was rich and brilliant from Thornton Wilder to Goldoni to Becket. Im looking forward to Shakespear e!

Great intimate venue. Seats a little tight for long legged people like me. The show was amazing. Mary Wiseman stole the show as Sabina. She nailed it.

Isolde - Incomprehe nsible. Richard Maxwell had a vision but I can't for the life of me tell you what it was. He got his Tristan and Isolde from Wikipedia and his dialogue from seemingly random Googles.... It needed a Richard Foreman Giant Duck. However, we LOVE TFANA and will excuse the occasional miss. "Servant of Two Masters" is a wonderful production . At once true to the centuries- old form and fresh, inventive, and timely. I laughed all the way through, and oh did I need that!
Kathleen Anderson Culebro ·
Everything I've ever seen here has been impeccable . And I'm pretty unforgivin g. Don't miss their work. oh! And the rosemary nuts at the cafe are really good.

Servant of Two Masters was very updated, bad reviews didn't warrant criticism, first laughs since the election
