Participants will gain important background knowledge to help treat their trans patients with confidence and sensitivity.
Trans Health 101 Workshop
Learn about the basic healthcare solutions available to trans patients, and why different trans people might seek different options. This workshop for health care providers and students will cover topics including hormones, surgeries, and barriers to trans healthcare. We will also discuss why trans identities are not always defined by medical procedures. Participants will leave better equipped to help trans patients navigate their specific healthcare needs.
Non-binary Panel
This panel, geared for healthcare providers and students, will discuss what it means to exist outside the “male” and “female” boxes. Become versed in different non-binary gender identities, such as agender and genderqueer. Providers will learn how to ask different patients the right questions about themselves, and better understand the healthcare needs of all. Lunch will be provided.
Mental Health Issues – Lunch Talk
Dr. Jennifer Evans will lead this talk on mental health issues in the trans community. Dr. Evans will cover the psychological stressors faced by many trans people, and common concurrent mental illnesses that healthcare providers should be aware of. A question and answer session will follow Dr. Evan's talk. Lunch will be provided.
Safer Sex – Workshop
This workshop will teach healthcare providers and students how to have smart, informative, honest sex talks with trans patients. We will cover safe sex tools from condoms to dental dams, HIV testing, consent and more. Participants will leave better equipped to counsel trans patients on having safe, healthy sex lives.
Intimate Partner Violence – Lunch Talk
Healthcare providers and students are encouraged to attend this talk on intimate partner violence and trans patients. Teresa Drake, founder the Intimate Partner Violence Assitance Clinic, and Ashley Flattery, a victim advocate counselor with the Alachua County Victim Services and Rape Crisis Center, will teach you to better recognize violent relationships and the specific issues that trans victims might face. You will leave better equipped to screen your patients and provide comprehensive care. A question and answer session will follow the talk. Lunch will be provided.
Health Disparities For QTPOC - Panel
How do race, class, and gender collectively influence a patient’s needs? For many queer, trans people of color, social factors can determine a variety of specific health problems, while systemic prejudices can stand in the way of quality healthcare. Healthcare providers and students are encouraged to attend this panel, which will examine the unique issues or obstacles a trans person of color might face, and how to address them. Lunch will be provided.
