When I think of UAB, I am overwhelmed with emotions and memories. Growing up, I found it hard to fit in with other people because I was awkward and quirky (still am) and didn't know how to effectively communicate with others. When I first came to UAB two years ago, I was unsure if I would find friends who would embrace me, but I was very wrong. I got involved in several organizations and made wonderful friends that have continued to support me throughout my time here. With ou...r diverse student body, you are bound to meet someone who you can connect with. You will find people who are just like you and others who are so different that you just want to sit down and learn about them. I am thankful for the opportunity to be a TrailBlazer because I get to share my love of UAB and unique experiences with prospective students, and I gained an amazing family in the process.
We are so happy to announce our CIVSA Nominees for the 2018 CIVSA Student Conference at Ohio State University! Your TrailBlazer family cannot wait to see all of the wonderful and bright ideas the four of you will bring back to UAB!
When I toured UAB as a prospective student, I had a TrailBlazer who really went out of her way to talk about my interests apart from the generic information. This meant a lot to me, and when I got to UAB, I could see where her enthusiasm came from. I wanted to get involved in something that felt natural to me, and what's more natural than talking about something you enjoy? UAB has caring professors, a passionate student body, and is in the middle of a fun city, which makes ta...lking about it easy. As a TrailBlazer, I get to connect with prospective students on a more personal level and talk to them about how they want to better the worId. I also love having the chance to encourage others, as many don't realize that they're much more than a GPA or an ACT score. Being a TrailBlazer has DEFINITELY turned out to be something I can naturally do, and has given me a little family of fellow TrailBlazers. My experience has been extremely rewarding because of the people I'm surrounded by, and I can't wait for the rest of the year! Go Blazers!
UAB is a brilliant place filled with so many opportunities. When I toured campus my sophomore year of high school, I not only fell in love with the university but also the city of Birmingham. One of the most important parts of UAB's campus is its diversity. The experiences here cannot be found just anywhere. I wanted potential students to understand that the university is excellent in providing students with a variety of future occupations and pursuing their goals, which is w...hy I became a TrailBlazer. My favorite part of the week is my daily campus tour. There is nothing that excites me more than interacting with prospective students who are beginning to fall in love with UAB the same way I did.
Since I am from Illinois, I did not know anyone or anything when I first arrived on campus. I knew I had to get involved in the campus community and so I joined a group called Green Team. As a member of Green Team, I was given the opportunity to shadow Trailblazers on their tours. I fell in love with everything about being a Trailblazer. I knew that I too wanted to help prospective students find their home at UAB. I applied as soon as the TrailBlazer application was available... and I am so happy that I did. Being a member of UAB's TrailBlazer team has been the most amazing and rewarding experience of my life. I have made so many friends as well as received emails from prospective students telling me that my tour made them fall in love with UAB. Because I am a TrailBlazer, I was also offered a job at the Office of Undergraduate Admissions as a student worker and I am loving it! Becoming a TrailBlazer has presented me with so many wonderful friends, opportunities and memories I will cherish forever. Go Blazers!
I may seem quiet and reserved at times, but once I hear someone mention something I love, I immediately get excited and fired up. And one sure way to get me excited is to ask me about UAB. Being able to spread my love for UAB, whether it is by leading a tour, answering a question, or simply just smiling at a passerby, is everything I could’ve hoped for when I became a TrailBlazer. Even on my daily commute to campus, I can’t help but get excited when I see “Univ. of Alabama At... Birmingham - Exit 259”. Being a part of recruiting new students to our Blazer family is a dream come true; it makes my heart so happy seeing prospective students that I have given a tour to come back to UAB and share with me how excited they are about coming to UAB. Although my name tag specifies that I am a UAB TrailBlazer, every time I pass by a UAB student, I see them as a trailblazer; each student, whether they know it or not, is blazing a new trail with the opportunities and knowledge they are taking advantage of at UAB. As a prospective student, I came in saying that research was the reason I chose UAB, but now, I believe that the people at UAB are changing my world and the reason I keep choosing UAB.
Ever faithful, ever loyal.
Congratulations to our very own TrailBlazer, Yulianna Jiménez, on winning the title of Ms. UAB! We know you will represent this title and the university to its best! Your TrailBlazer family is so proud of you!!
I clearly remember the first time I stepped onto the UAB campus. I had been on a week of college tours, and UAB was my final stop. Within just a few moments after my TrailBlazer tour started, I looked at my mom and told her, "This is it. No more tours. I'm home." I remember meeting the Trailblazers who led my group and thinking how it was cool that UAB had real students who were able to be an influential part of helping someone make a college choice decision. One of the th...ings I most appreciated during the tour was that my TrailBlazers didn't just list off facts and figures like guides did at other universities. My Trailblazers made every location on the tour seem special, and shared personal stories which enabled to me to "see" myself being a Blazer. I was so impressed by their knowledge and insight on what it was like to be a UAB student, I decided right then that I wanted to be in their shoes one day. In fact, when I came to Freshman Orientation Day, I immediately signed up for Green Team in hopes of seeing what all was involved in being a tour guide and assisting with the admission process. I absolutely LOVED it, and truly enjoyed meeting prospective students from across the country. When I became a TrailBlazer, my love for this University grew more and more as I learned about all that UAB has to offer. Being from Tennessee, my fellow TrailBlazers have also given me another family here in Alabama, and joining this wonderful group has been one of the best decisions I have made as a college student. I chose to be a TrailBlazer because I want to share my passion for UAB and all the incredible, diverse, and wonderful opportunities that this University has to offer. I am so excited to make new memories this year, while meeting and sharing my love for UAB with prospective students!
I remember the campus tours I went on as a senior in high school. I hung on every word that the tour-givers said, asked every relevant question I could think of, and took notes like my college career depended on it. In a way, it kind of did--I was still torn between universities when I reached crunch time. Thankfully, one thing led to another, and I landed at UAB last August. Since then, I've tried to take as many opportunities as possible to let people know that UAB has some...thing for them. I found that being a TrailBlazer is one of the most awesome ways to do just that. I've met several families and prospective students, and it's still so refreshing to see a new student on campus who recognizes me as the guy who unashamedly made lame jokes on his tour. And, if all goes as planned, I'll be making lame jokes for a while.
