It is my unfortunate duty to inform the Golden Eagle Rugby community that the alumni match for this year has been canceled.
Due to the accumulation of injuries and other extenuating circumstances, the core group of players from the past several years dwindled dramatically this semester such that we've had a difficult time even mustering a sevens side, and it has become both an unrealistic expectation and an unsafe endeavor to attempt throwing together a side for the match. F...urthermore, just as the rest of student organizations on campus have suffered historically low numbers of underclassmen participation, so have we.
I personally offer an apology to all those connected with the annual Alumni Match, particularly those expecting to play in it.
Lastly, I ask for your support in what looks to be an arduous process of reconstituting the club such that it can succeed next school year and beyond. Our equipment is old, our recruitment poor, our funding minimal, our website offline, and our alumni outreach nonexistent.
I, a close cadre of veterans, and our coaches will work hard over the summer and in the upcoming semester to ensure the future success of Southern Miss Rugby, but we cannot do it without your help.
More details will follow in the upcoming months, but in the mean time, please message the page if you wish to become more involved.
This is a sad day for the Southern Miss rugby community: Lee McKee II was killed in a motorcycle accident Thursday afternoon. Lee played from 1993 to 1997, an integral part of an undefeated Deep South championship team that went to the national playoffs.
The crest our players, past and present, wear over their hearts (and you can see in our profile photo) was designed by Lee McKee during his time at Southern Miss. A great teammate, a great rugby player, and a good friend, we... all will miss Lee McKee terribly. Rest In Peace brother!
Raise a pint tonight for Lee McKee!
