Today’s November 15th birthday belongs to BM2 Gary Loren Sage. Gary was born at Mrs. Hansen’s house in Bloomfield, Nebraska, (as many farm children would be born at neighbors or midwife's homes at the time) to Ernest and Eunice Sage. He was raised on the Sage farm in Niobrara. Gary had three brothers: Greg, Kelly Jo, and Doug.
Gary graduated from Niobrara High School in 1965. He loved to sing and would do so just about anywhere, even when milking cows – which also he love...d to do. And he worked in Lincoln, Nebraska, for a while before joining the Navy.
Gary actually went to join the Marines, but came home in the Navy. He went to boot camp at NTC Great Lakes, Illinois. His plan was to go to school to become a veterinarian, but first he had to serve his time. His first duty station was aboard USS MERRICK (AKA 97).
On 17 September 1968 he transferred aboard USS FRANK E EVANS (DD 754) in Long Beach, California, so he could serve with his brother, RD3 Gregory Sage. Greg was married and living in Long Beach with his wife, Linda, and their baby son Doug. Gary lived with them as they were all close. He tried (unsuccessfully says Linda) to teach her to cook. He was very good cook and loved to fix meals for everyone.
The younger brother, Kelly Jo, also joined them in the Evans and lived a short time with his brothers in the apartment.
In March 1968, they drove to Niobrara for a two week leave before leaving for the Westpac cruise to Vietnam. It was the last time the boys saw their family.
At the time of the collision Gary was sleeping in 1st Division, forward of and one deck below the mess decks. It is believed that Gary told everyone to settle down and he would get them out. Only six of the thirty seven souls in the division survived. Gary and his brothers did not.
BM2 Gary Loren Sage was born this day in 1946 and would have been 23 years old. Had he survived he would be 74 years old today.
Rest in the arms of the Lord, Gary. Your family, friends and shipmates still love and miss you.
Today’s November 12th birthday belongs to SA John Alan Sauvey. John, known to his family and school mates as John Alan or “Elly”, was born at Port Clinton, Ohio, to John and Mary Sauvey. Elly graduated from Lakeside (now Danbury) High School in 1967. He loved to hunt and play basketball. He also... had a comical side to his personality, and everyone had a good time around him.
John entered the Navy in 1967 at Marblehead, Ohio, and went to boot camp at NTC Great Lakes, Illinois. After graduation from boot camp, he reported aboard USS FRANK E EVANS (DD 754) on 24 February 1968 and was assigned to 1st Division where he served for 15 months. His best friend was SN Major A.
