UAPO "Books For Ghana Project" Completed
On Friday, January 23, 2015 the Universal African Peoples Organization (UAPO) completed a yearlong project to support the development of a library in the Ashanti region of Ghana, West Africa by shipping over 10,000 books.
This particular effort defined as the "Books for Ghana Project" was initiated in the spirit of Pan Africanism which advocates that Black people should be supportive of each other no matter where we live....
The idea for this particular project began when Reynaldo Anderson an UAPO member and Professor at Harris Stowe University/St. Louis was visiting Ghana in 2013. While there, he was asked by community and political leaders of the Sekyera Afram Plains District in Ghana to spearhead an effort to generate books for a library they were building upon his return to the United States.
Being aware of the UAPO previous international humanitarian efforts of shipping books, clothing, medical supplies, food, and water to other countries such as Namibia, Zimbabwe, Haiti and Ethiopia; Professor Anderson reached out to Zaki Baruti, head of the UAPO to help in this endeavor.
Zaki and the UAPO staff immediate response was a resounding yes to his request.
To successfully accomplish and complete the mission, the UAPO had the support of the following organizations and individuals: Legacy Bookstore & Cafe, Afro World, Muhammad Islamic Academy, Central Baptist Church,University City Library, Imani Youth Organization, Junior Black Chamber of Commerce, Curtis & Pamela Kemp, Emanuel & Harriet Opoku, Ms J. Page, Nana Sewaa Williams and countless UAPO members.

On behalf of the Justice for Michael Brown Leadership Coalition we would like to thank the hundreds of people who physically displayed their support for the Hig...hway 70 Shutdown last Wednesday, September 10, 2014. We also thank the thousands of people who supported this effort in spirit.
Although not able to close the highway down completely due to the overwhelming state highway and local police forces, we consider our action a success based on the following:
1. A determined force of over 600 people gathered as planned to continue the clarion call for justice for not only Mike Brown, but for our people in general.
2. Due to their overwhelming presence, the police actually helped our crusade by causing a tremendous traffic jam.
3. A determined band of young people as part of our overall strategy, stopped their vehicles on the East bound lanes of highway 70 causing further traffic stoppage for 4 1/2 minutes, symbolizing the 4 1/2 hours the police allowed Mike Brown's body to lay on the ground after his murder by officer Darren Wilson.
4. Also, the same day, another band of your people completely stopped traffic on Interstate 64/40 for at least 30 minutes in conjunction with the the highway 70 shutdown.
5. Finally, traffic on North Florissant Rd., in front of the Ferguson Police Department was stopped for nearly 1 1/2 hours.
So, my people, with the multiple actions that took place, we claim victory for that day. But, the struggle continues on.
Our next action is to pack the upcoming public meeting of the St. Louis County Council which will be held 6:00pm- Tuesday, September 16, 2014 at the St. Louis County Chambers, 1st Fl, 41 South Central, Clayton, MO.
