Today we celebrate National Teacher’s Day and honor the educators who are molding our nation’s future leaders.
Now more than ever, we must work to ensure our educators and staff are receiving adequate pay, increased funding for essential school supplies, and the support they all deserve.
I will continue to support our teachers and am proud to co-sponsor the National Teacher Day resolution that will be introduced in the House today. This legislation assists the goal of increased public school teacher pay and public education funding. I ask you to join me in this fight and demand a better working environment for educators everywhere. #TeacherAppreciationDay
If you are a middle school or high school student interested in learning more about Service Academies, please join us for our annual Service Academy Day, where you will have the opportunity to speak with representatives from various academies throughout the country. #TX34Forward
Today, I had the honor of speaking at South Texas College’s 13th Annual Symposium on Human Trafficking, Más allá de la Frontera: Global Responses to Human Trafficking.
We must continue working to ensure vulnerable people across the globe are protected and that a heightened awareness exists in our communities so that we may all recognize the signs of human trafficking and do our part in putting an end to it, once and for all.

Congratulations to Customs and Border Protection (CBP), General Services Administration (GSA) Cameron County, The City of Harlingen and The City of San Benito on the opening of the Cold Room Inspection Facility at the Free Trade International Bridge at Los Indios. The new facility will allow produce to stay fresh while going through secondary inspection at the bridge, giving it a longer shelf life.
The cold storage facility will elevate Cameron County’s presence within the international trade industry, while providing more business opportunities and growth throughout South Texas. #TX34Forward

The Fiscal Year 2018 Omnibus that passed both the House and Senate yesterday includes a provision to prohibit border wall funding in the Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge. This provision is the result of nearly a yearlong effort that local and national activists and I have made to inform my colleagues in Congress of the environmental threats posed by the border wall. Keeping the border wall out of the Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge was a top priority and the barring of b...order wall funds at the refuge will ensure that Texans and Texas wildlife can enjoy this habitat for years to come. While I ultimately could not support the final passage of the bill because it funds the border wall in other locations and provides no protections for DREAMers, this exemption is a significant victory for South Texas to keep the "jewel of the National Wildlife Refuge" pristine. #NoBorderWall

Last week I invited U.S. Congressman Henry Cuellar (TX-28) and Rep. Donald Norcross (NJ-1) down to TX-34 to visit sites throughout my district and to show them what TX-34 has to offer. One of the places we visited was UTRGV - The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Center for Advanced Radio Astronomy (CARA) where Dr. Rick Jenet and his physics students briefed my colleagues and I on their Spacecraft Tracking and Astronomical Research into Gigahertz Astrophysical Transient Emission(STARGATE) Project, a project through which UTRGV students will be involved in aspects of SpaceX missions, including the design, testing, and launching of spacecraft and orbital operations. I thank Reps. Cuellar and Norcross for taking the time to vist TX-34 and look forward to working with them to support STEM research. #TX34Forward

Yesterday I introduced H.R. 4940, the Border Ports and Security Act, to increase U.S. Customs Border Protection (CBP)’s capacity to screen passengers and facilitate trade at international airports, seaports, and land ports of entry by authorizing additional CBP Officers (CBPOs) and Agriculture Specialists. This morning I met with Humberto Garcia from the National Treasury Employees Union (NTEU) to discuss the bill. The bill has the full support of the NTEU and I ask my colleagues to support H.R. 4940 to improve CBPO safety and productivity.
Enjoyed chatting with officials from the Olmito Water Supply Corporation as well as the East Rio Hondo Water Company in Washington, DC today. They are in town to meet with Members of Congress to discuss rural water programs and the upcoming Farm Bill. #TX34Forward
