"Their system" mysteriously changed my apartment number and sent very sensitive, personal information to the wrong apartment. I tried to correct it and was treated like it didn't really mean anything ...and "why are you upset"
If you have ever wondered what end-stage, terminal apathy looks like; just wander into the James E. Van Zandt Medial Center.
No communication between employees, managers refuse to accept responsibility for their subordinates, treat your concerns like they do not matter, they get uppity when you refuse medication before they have even informed you of a diagnosis, offer no explanation nor mitigating circumstances when they consistently start your appointments late, and in general treat you like the only reason they tolerate you is that with out patients there would be no way for them to collect a paycheck.

Although my experience with this facility is limited at this point, I would like to formally thank Physician, Dr. D. Nackley who although exceptionally busy in his department, has taken the time to gu...ide me through a barrier. Dr. Nackley treated me with the utmost respect during this trying time. Although I have taken the time to thank him via phone, using social media offers an opportunity to express my appreciation in a manner for which other patients will recognize... Thank You Dr. Nackly. Yesterday I had my first time travel experience using the Veterans Administration's transportation services at the James E. Van Zandt VA Hospital to travel to Pittsburgh for a 11:00 AM appointment at ...the HJ Heinz Division (Aspinwall)! I'm writing number one today to thank the driver of this beautiful bus we we're all transported on (Brad was his name...I never did catch his last name)! Brad is definitely A "First Class" representative of The VA in my book! He's a excellent driver & was most helpful to all of us (especially those in wheel chairs or struggling to get around)! So, to "You Brad".....I say "Thank You" for chauffeuring us around yesterday!

To those VA folks who scheduled my appointment I give you credit - that's definitely a challenge for you (that I could see after getting there)! I had my worries with being dropped off at one facility (Univ. Drive) and being shuttled to my appointment at (HJ Heinz) - and then being shuttled from (HJ Heinz) back to where I started (Univ. Dr.) to catch the James E. Van Zandt bus back home at either 1PM or 4PM....but, it went smooth!

To the VA employees who I met at both the "University Drive Division" and the "HJ Heinz Division" (and the James E. Van Zandt).....thanks to you folks too for answering my many questions with a smile and some pleasantries too! To my amazement I must admit the "Shuttle Bus" system works pretty darn well!

Lastly, to the many Veterans & Hospitalized Veterans I met at all three facilities - I say to you all "Thank You My Brothers & Sisters for Your Service"! We Veterans are a special breed & it "shines thru for me when We're around each other"....I'm proud I'm one of those Veterans!

My Dr shows no emotion or interest at all in his patients. My wife and I are not very happy. I also got glasses from the VA. I went over to get them to adjust and tighten the screws up. They would not... do that without a appointment. Like I'm gonna drive 50 minutes for the to take 2 minutes to tighten 4 screws. Also I have heart issues. This place has know cardiac help here at all. It's all sent to Pittsburgh. So if I go there for a heart attack they can't do anything. See More

Doc Kaplon, at the Indiana PA satellite is why vets kill themselves. She has the bedside manner of a cat shitting tacks, and all the warmth of rancid cabbage. Moved up here from Texas where the system... is at least somewhat functional. Been here since November, have yet to have a physical exam, or blood work, but Kaplon did manage to stare at her computer for my entire initial appointment. When she was finished she completely fucked up my med schedule and dosages after 12 years. Unfuck yourselves. See More

Horrible place for vets to get help. I have the blue team and it's the worst medical service possible. The staff act like like your an inconvenience to a job created for them. The staff and doctors re...taliate if you complain about their shortcomings. Heaven forbid if you need help after 4pm. See More

I think they are doing to much building on to make a pretty hospital, which doesn't help in the care of our veterans. ..Need to bring back some procedures, instead of having our veterans go all the wa...y to Pittsburgh for a simple thing as a shot. .. you need more Dr's, so many have gone elsewhere. . When we go on the shuttle to Pittsburgh for appointment, they are so overwhelmed by this of sending everyone there.
The one time we went a veteran had an appointment for 9:30 ,he bless his heart was still waiting at 12:30..My husband had an appointment set up, got a certified letter in the mail that they couldn't reach him by phone, what? ? He talked to them set up his appointment yet they couldn't get him. ..called them said my appointment is already set up for 12:30 the guy said we don't have you, it was already setup for 3 weeks yet they didn't have him down. . The guy said I have a 1:30 for the same day. ..Yeah right he was down they just didn't want to admit their mistake. . Emergency room isn't even open 24/7 I ask why, was told not enough veterans using it but yet they are building a parking garage. ..bring back more procedures and stop all this building. ..The only good thing is when we do take the shuttle is mark, he is the best driver and always reassures any of us if we need to use the restroom to please let him know and he would find a place. .A shuttle like that and no bathroom on it, wow. We had an emergency stop and he did get him to the bathroom. ..A lot of times a spouse is with them, a lot of people have problems beyond their control, would of been nice to have a bathroom on them, expecially spending that much money. ...Instead of the care getting better it's getting worse, because of someone not doing their job when we went to Pittsburgh for that appointment, the Dr that was supposed to give my husband the shot was done for the day and the other one that could of given him it was behind, so he with all of his health problems had to turn around and go the next morning. ..12 hours out of our day one day to go to Pittsburgh for a 15 minute test, could of been done closer to home. ...well I could go on and on but am done for now. ..To many good Dr's are leaving or already gone, really sad having a beautiful hospital but not the good care all our veterans deserve. ..They deserve so much and are not getting it. ..Have a wonderful day. ...They messed up my husbands appointment to Pittsburgh once before but that time the guy did apologize. ..

There are negative things that happen I life especially when dealing with a hospital. However I have been to this hospital plenty of times over the past year including a 5 day stay with pneumonia to that the care I have received is nothing but fantastic. Sometimes the wait to be seen is long and others very short. The times I have waited was only bc there was a high volume of people. They needed care just as I did, so why get mad? I hope many read this and have a more positive outlook on the VA and all they do for us vets. It is something that I will be forever grateful for. Nothing is life will give you 100% satisfaction so why expect it from the people who are there for our military veterans. See More

I have been going to this va for almost 13 years. I have rarely had problems in Altoona. They have gone through a lot of changes in those 13 years. Most for the better.

My appointment was for 3:30 p.m. and I actually got in before 3:30. I had an issue with my hearing aids which cause them to need adjusted. They were quickly adjusted and new tube split on and I was on... my way before 4 p.m. . You can't get that kind of service anywhere. I was very pleased. See More

I had an issue with no luck of being solved by anyone until I spoke with Warren Tenley at the advocate office. He helped me greatly where I could not find it anywhere else and fixed the issue within a... day, where other departments would have taken two years. Thanks Warren. See More

They're a lot better than before but the pharmacy still has a lot to be desired. The staff are not too friendly in the pharmacy, but all in all, I like it there.
Mosey on down to hear Ira Clark and his boys play for our health fair.
Our volunteer, Rogan, plays some cool jazz for Veterans in the front entrance. This week we are honoring all Veterans. Thank you for your sacrifice and service.
