WOMEN IN POWER - AMBASSADOR ORIE ROGO MANDULI

KENYA - Today's Focus is on 'Iron Lady', Orie Rogo Manduli. Manduli, "I've fought and won many battles".

Ambassador Orie Rogo Manduli can be crowned as one of the Newsmakers for the year 2011. She has continued to fascinate many, not only by her unique sense of style and fashion, but also by her outspoken character that has seen her politically wrestle it out with men for various leadership positions.

A former model and rally driver, she has done what most women would consider taboo and what many men term as too aggressive, coming from a woman.
Ambassador Orie Rogo Manduli who at only 19 was a divorced mother of 3 says she has no apologies to make, and hopes her story remains symbolic in the continued fight for gender equality.

She says.....

I’m rebellious, capable and different, and I know it. I have never wanted to be anything else but Orie Rogo-Manduli. I’m bold and speak my mind without fear. I’m fastidious and never boring. I do not apologise for who I am — you just have to learn to live with me. I have always been an outspoken person who is never afraid to be different.

My father was ahead of his time and, apart from drilling into us the importance of education, he encouraged my outspoken nature by seeking my opinion on issues. I’m the first born of eight children (four girls and four boys) so you can imagine my life (laughs), so for me being first in everything I do has always been second nature.

Orie Rogo-Manduli

My background was very humble; I grew up in the slums of Kisumu (Kaloleni to be exact), but my mum turned the house into our home, a place where we always felt safe and wanted. She kept it beautiful and clean. She baked, cooked, cleaned and even sewed our clothes and dad’s shirts and socks. She was a super mum.

My mother made our home so welcoming that, despite being eight children, there were always people visiting and sleeping over — from relatives to young girls and boys who my parents ‘adopted’ in order to take to school. Back then, some parents did not understand the importance of educating their children, leave alone girls. You educate a woman and you educate a whole nation, so whenever my parents would identify a bright girl or boy who wanted to finish school, they would adopt them. Our home was like a hotel where no one paid (laughs).

My parents were both teachers and they were very strict with me. They always told me that as the first-born, I was the family’s mirror and thus if I succeeded, then my siblings would succeed too, so I worked hard to always be top in school.

Growing up, I was the ultimate daddy’s girl. My father made me feel like I was not only the most brilliant and beautiful girl in the world, but that I could do anything if only I dreamt it and worked hard. He taught me from the time I was a little girl that both girls and boys were equal, that none was better than the other.

Waste of life

He was my greatest influence. In our home, no one was more superior to the other — we were all equal. He taught me many lessons but the one that I still preach even today is that education is for life; that a woman should own property and not just dream of owning by association to a male. Young girls today only aspire to be successful by association. I wonder, why don’t you have your own success? Why do you want to piggyback on someone else’s success?

Some people are content to just leech on the successes of others. To me, that is a waste of life. Get your own act; that is my policy. Stop this tag-along type of success. Don’t claim success by association; don’t live off the successes of others.

No matter what was going on in my life, I always knew dad and mum would support me. When dad died in 1977 due to high blood pressure, my life literally came to a standstill. For a while I had no focus because he had been my focus; he had been so wise. Whenever I think of him I still have tears in my eyes; he was truly a great man.

I first got married when I was 16 years old and it was one of the biggest mistakes of my life. During my wedding, I remember watching my parents cry but they were not tears of joy. I now know that sometimes as a parent, you can only watch what your children are doing and pray things will work out. My marriage ended up being very chaotic. I gave birth to my eldest daughter when I was barely 17 and the next two followed in quick succession.

Because I was very young, all my births were through Caesarean section. I only had girls and that made my husband become abusive. He made me and my babies feel inferior and unloved. He would constantly tell me he had no child; that having three daughters was a curse and that people were laughing at him. He was both physically and emotionally abusive, but as he was much older, he was manipulative and I stayed with him because society expected me to. I suffered in silence.

The day the abuse moved from me to my children, something in me snapped. It was the final straw. I remember thinking, ‘you can mistreat me but not my babies’. I told him, "Did you say I can’t have a son? Then go get your son because my three babies are all I have."

I took my children and walked out, not knowing where to go. I was a young mother with three babies on her back and no financial assistance from my ex-husband. I had to toil day and night to take care of my children, juggling between a strenuous full-time job and a couple of part-time jobs.

My parents did not have much but they supported me emotionally, psychologically and socially. Sometimes this is all a woman needs to move on and rise.

I had already acquired the reputation of being rebellious and I wanted to prove to everybody that I could take care of my children on my own. Before my divorce, I had watched one of my aunts go through a painful divorce. She sunk into depression and self-pity and I did not want that to happen to me because I knew such emotions had a way of spilling on to the children.

My aunt struggled financially and socially. I decided to hold my head up and worked three jobs to put my daughters through the best schools. During the day I was worked as the marketing and public relations manager at Metal Box Company, and in the evening I worked for KBC as an anchor for Mambo Leo, a current affairs programme.

It was a crazy time. I would carry a change of clothes for my job at KBC because, as the show’s hostess, I was expected to look pretty and sophisticated as the job often involved interviewing VIPs and other special guests.

I worked hard, and it was all worth it. My eldest daughter Elizabeth is an oil and gas engineer; my second daughter Alison owns a human resource organisation, while my third daughter Janice works for Kenya Pipeline in the communications department. My last born son Katyana is a computer engineer and linguistic expert in Japan.

Very flamboyant

After my first marriage, I told my parents I would never get married again but they encouraged me to try again. In 1980, while filming a documentary for BBC in Lusaka on the late Joshua Nkomo, I met Misheck Norman Manduli, a descendant of the Lunda dynasty — one of Zambia’s royal families. He was 30 years older than me but he was more dapper. He was a great traveller and dresser. He was an extrovert and very flamboyant.

When we met it was fireworks. We were perfect for each other. Because he was older, he was more mature and confident. He understood me and encouraged me to be me. His first wife, Mary, had died and he had gotten married a second time but the marriage did not work out. Then he met me.

We got married in 1980 and instantly created a large family — I had three children and he had seven. Interestingly, I was only a couple of years older than his first daughter and we hit it off and became the best of friends. Our home was wonderful and loving, full of warmth and laughter. Our children mingled beautifully. We were blessed with a son (Katyana) in 1983. My first husband had always said I would never bear a son yet here I was, with a baby boy.

The Zambians have a wonderful culture of respect, where both the husband and the wife are attentive to each other and the family. My husband passed on in March 2, 2003. I have remained single ever since. Replacing Norman is not easy — he was a great husband, father, friend, business partner and fellow dreamer.

Raila said that he has forgiven the Gatundu South MP since he was only entertaining Jubilee supporters and a person with an intent to kill does not announce in public.

“He was just entertaining the people. Lord forgive them for they do not know what they are doing.”

Raila was speaking during the Requiem Mass of post-independence Minister Ngala Mwendwa at the AIC Church in Milimani.

Kuria is among eight lawmakers arrested on Tuesday for making statements deemed as inciteful or bordering on hate speech.

GOVERNOR KIDERO "SLAPS" SENATOR SONKO

Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero and Mike Sonko fought on Wednesday after the Senator accused him of being a murderer.

They exchanged blows at a Senate Public Accounts Committee session where Kidero was being quizzed over the county's financial spending for the 2013/14 financial year.

...

Trouble started when Sonko made a presentation on land rates in Nairobi, which he said were illegal. He appeared as a friend of the committee to table documents on the rates.

Nyamira Senator Kennedy Mong'are interjected terming Sonko's presentation "extraneous" and said they were not backed by evidence.

He said: "Sonko, you cannot intimidate anyone here. The issues are extraneous and can be prosecuted elsewhere, not in this venue."

Sonko angrily replied asking the Senator to take the "nonsense" to his county.

The two then engaged in an exchange during which Sonko banged the table and accosted Mong'are, saying he had "seen" the Governor.

Sonko claimed a woman in Nairobi was ejected from her Sh2 million property and "murdered by Kidero and his Chief of Staff George Wainaina".

He tabled a form which he said showed how the property's ownership was transferred but the committee questioned its admissibility.

The Senator then shouted at Kidero saying: "He is a murderer and I cannot withdraw that. I have video clips to prove that and I have no apologies to make."

Sonko said he blocked a punch from Kidero. The Governor walked out saying he would return to answer the audit queries in a conducive environment.

The session was adjourned until further notice.

But Siaya Senator James Orengo, who is acting as Junet's lawyer, insisted on taking his client for questioning.

Police went to the MP's house on Monday evening but he was not around, prompting a search for him.

Junet is among six politicians asked to appear at the CID headquarters to record statements over inciting remarks.

Others summoned by IG Joseph Boinnet were Moses Kuria (Gatundu South), Ferdinand Waititu (Kabete), Kimani Ngunjiri (Bahati) and Aisha Jumwa (Kilifi woman representative).

No one is being allowed in and out of Muthama's home.

NAKED RESTAURANT TO BE OPENED IN LONDON

With more than 45,000 people on the waiting list, The Bunyadi, London’s first naked restaurant is creating quite a buzz and it’s not even opened to the public yet.

According to an exclusive first-tasting by Time Out London, The Bunyadi is set to open to the public on June 11, offering five-course set menus from £55 to £65.

...

The Bunyadi plans to use only the most natural, home-grown ingredients to envelope its patrons in a Pangea-like world, free from phones, electric lights and even clothing (not compulsory)!

Guests will enjoy wood-flame grilled meals served on handmade clay crockery and edible cutlery, in a space void of the industrialised-world’s modern trappings. They will dine under a canopy of candle lights, creatively partitioned with bamboo and wicker, as they recline on wood-hewn furniture.

“We believe people should get the chance to enjoy and experience a night out without any impurities: no chemicals, no artificial colours, no electricity, no gas, no phone and even no clothes if they wish to. The idea is to experience true liberation.”Seb Lyall, the founder of Lollipop explained.

The venue is specifically designed to be split into two sections (“pure and clothed”), and has a capacity of forty-two. Assuming there are two seatings every evening, with the current waiting list, it would take about a year and a half to serve everyone!

RAILA ODINGA WELCOMES UHURU KENYATTA'S IEBC JOINT COMMITTEE FORMATION

CORD leader Raila Odinga has welcomed the formation of a Joint Select Committee of both Houses of Parliament to resolve the IEBC stalemate.

Odinga, who spoke shortly after President Kenyatta announced formation of the committee in an address at State House, said he expects this will help resolve the impasse.

...

“That is basically what we have been calling for. We have said that we wanted a Joint Select Committee in order to negotiate. As you know, we already have set up our side of the team consisting of two Senators and three members of the National Assembly. I would say that this is a welcome development,” Odinga said in an interview with KTN after President Kenyatta’s statement.

He said CORD, which has been holding weekly protests to push for dialogue on the IEBC would hold a meeting on Thursday following the new development.

“We have always maintained that demonstrations are not an end but a means to an end. And that is the reason we have said we will respond once we know exactly if the negotiations will start… we will of course review the position with regard to demonstrations,” he said.

In an address to Kenyans from State House, President Kenyatta said he had held consultations with religious leaders drawn from most faiths in the country earlier on Wednesday.

“The mandate of the committee will be strictly and exclusively the matter of IEBC,” President Kenyatta said at a briefing after the meeting that was attended by Speakers Justin Muturi of the National Assembly and Ekwee Ethuro of the Senate.

He said all stakeholders, public and private should be accorded an opportunity to make submissions to the joint select committee “as provided in the Standing Orders of both Houses of Parliament, and in the constitutional spirit of public participation.”

He emphasised the need to forge ahead within the confines of the Constitution.

“Any attempts to exercise it outside the provisions of the constitution not only undermines both the spirit and letter of the constitution, but is also a recipe for confusion and anarchy,” President Kenyatta affirmed.

President Kenyatta made it clear that everyone to respect, uphold and defend the Constitution “as an obligation and not an option.”

MONKEYS CAUSE NATIONAL BLACKOUT IN KENYA

The Kenya Electricity Generation Company said in a statement late Tuesday that a monkey climbed onto the roof of the Gitaru Power Station and fell onto a transformer, tripping it.

The company said this resulted in the loss of 180MW from the plant, triggering a national blackout. The statement did not say whether the monkey survived.

...

The blackout lasted more than three hours Tuesday before power was restored.

The company said that its facility is secured with an electric fence.

"We regret this isolated incident and the company is looking at ways of further enhancing security at all our power plants," the firm added.

Kenyan businesses regularly complain that power cuts — due to its aging grid — and unreliable supplies make them uncompetitive and hurt growth.

JAMIE VARDY'S ARSENAL MOVE COULD BE CATASTROPHIC FOR LEICESTER CITY

Jamie Vardy arrives in France for Euro 2016 with England as his club future remains undecided
Losing Jamie Vardy to Arsenal "could be catastrophic" for Premier League champions Leicester City, says former Foxes defender Gerry Taggart.

...

England striker Vardy, 29, is deciding whether to accept a reported £120,000-a-week offer from the Gunners.

"If Jamie goes then one or two others might want to leave as well," Taggart told BBC Radio 5 live.

"The whole Leicester ethos over the last couple of seasons has been built around people like Vardy."

The former Northern Ireland international added: "For the good of the whole team and the club it is important Vardy stays."

Vardy, in France for Euro 2016, only signed a new three-year deal, worth a reported £60,000-a-week, in February.

But the Gunners, who eventually finished second in the Premier League to the Foxes, triggered a release clause with a £20m bid on Friday.

Leicester are reported to have made an improved counter-offer in a bid to keep Vardy, whose 24 goals helped Claudio Ranieri's side become English champions.

Vardy was expected to make a decision on Monday before flying to France, but he arrived at England's base in Chantilly with no update on his future.

Arsenal hope a decision will come before the tournament starts on 10 June.

Vardy joined Leicester from Fleetwood for £1m in 2012.

He was named the Football Writers' Association Footballer of the Year for 2015-16 and has scored three times in eight games for England.

QUOTE OF THE DAY: Every successful person has a painful story and every painful story has a successful ending, so accept the pain and get ready for success...

POULTRY KEEPING, IMPROVING LIFESTYLE

After their graduation from different colleges, Nelson Maina and his friends began their search for white collar jobs. But to their surprise, with no job experience, no one listened to their story.

Maina and his four friends decided to venture into poultry farming in 2006. With a capital of Sh100,000 from their savings, they were ready to start their poultry farm, Modern Moguls Farm at Karogoto, Nyeri County.

...

“We decided to venture into farming because poultry keeoing in Kenya is probably one of the most lucrative business when it is setup and managed properly,” said Maina, the farm manager. At first they decided to keep the commonly kept breeds (broilers and layers) as a way of trying to penetrate into the market.

Six years down the line, Maina attended a poultry farming seminar in Israel and came across another breed and upon his return the group diversified to an exotic breed known as Israel breed which is more profitable compared to others.

“This kind of chicken is way bigger than the local Kenyan chicken, weighing and fetching more profits as well. The birds are imported either as eggs and hatched or as live birds,” he said.

Although the breed was doing well in Kenya, a problem arose when hens started laying eggs without sitting on them to hatch, forcing them to get an incubator. Without cash to purchase an incubator they applied for a Youth Fund Loan and fortunately they were given money to buy two incubators which can hatch 528 eggs at a go.

“The only challenge we are facing is that since this breed don’t hatch eggs, then we have to use incubator and this means that you have to keep the chicks in a brooder to keep low mortality,” he said.

Currently, the farm has employed two workers and more than 200 mature birds. They can hatch 200 chicks daily. Though it sounds as a big investment, Maina revealed that they only sell chicks and not the eggs or mature birds unless they are disposing them.

“We dispose our chicken after one-and-a-half to two years depending on the weight of the chicken. Our cock can weigh up to 12 kilogrammes while our hen goes up to eight kilogrammes when well fed,” he said.

He revealed that they don’t sell one-day-old chick as the norm in this industry but they sell three-week-old chicks so that mortality rate are minimal. A three-week-old chick goes for Sh200 and a mature chicken goes for between Sh1500 and Sh3,000 depending on the size.

He says that even though Kenya has a shortage of poultry farmers, the problem might be there 10 years to come because most people are now taking white meat instead of red meat.

The aspect of livestock farming presents one of the finest opportunities for smart thinking entrepreneurs to make good money within the shortest period of time possible. He urges youths who are struggling to make the end meets to apply for youth fund loans and they will be able to boost their business.
