Five-Star Match of the Week: The Rock vs. Brock Lesnar ━ Undisputed WWE Championship Match, SummerSlam 2002 Two men seem to dominate the modern-day landscape of WWE: The Rock and Brock Lesnar. The current WWE Champion shocked fans when he re-emerged as the WrestleMania host in 2011, and Lesnar elicited a similar reaction upon his return 10 months ago. Over the past year, they have both clashed with John Cena in equally epic encounters. But it was more than 10 years ago that Lesnar and The Brahma Bull first faced off with each other. SummerSlam 2002 marked the final step in Brock’s stunning ascent to the top of the squared circle’s ranks. But when WWEClassics.com attempted to speak with Paul Heyman about the classic main event, he was none too pleased with how we phrased our question. “First of all, I disagree with the designation that it’s The Rock vs. Brock,” Lesnar’s longtime agent asserted. “It is Brock Lesnar vs. The Rock. Brock deserves top billing. And he deserves top billing because he won the match.” Indeed he did. And not by virtue of cheating, Heyman was quick to remind us. “[Brock] did not win the match with outside interference,” the mad scientist of sports-entertainment said. “In fact, The Rock hit me with a Rock Bottom through a table. I was not an equation.” After debuting in WWE on the night after WrestleMania X8, Lesnar ran roughshod over the entire roster, annihilating the competition and cementing his status as a legitimate threat to any competitor. Three months later, the massive rookie won the King of the Ring Tournament to earn an opportunity to challenge for the WWE Championship at SummerSlam. The People’s Champion defeated Hulk Hogan on the night prior to Lesnar’s debut, but did not compete much over the next several months. One month before SummerSlam, at Vengeance, however, The Rock won his seventh WWE Championship, setting up the inevitable confrontation with the newly minted King Lesnar. “Brock Lesnar defeated The Rock cleanly to become the Undisputed WWE Champion,” Heyman reminded us. “And in doing so, he put his boot on the neck of The Attitude Era and anointed himself the new reigning monarch of the WWE Universe.” Today, the landscape is much different, but Brock and Rock have maintained their dominance. Each warrior can lay claim to being revered by foes and friends alike, but only one scenario can determine who the better man is: a rematch.

Daniel Bryan undergoes successful neck surgery

WWE World Heavyweight Champion Daniel Bryan underwent successful surgery to repair a lingering neck injury Thursday morning, WWE.com learned.

After being diagnosed with the nerve issue in his neck by WWE physician Dr. Chris Amann, Bryan underwent a minimally invasive microsurgical procedure known as a cervical foraminotomy to decompress the nerve root. The surgery was performed by world-renowned neurosurgeon and sports medicine ...expert Dr. Joseph Maroon. WWE.com was not able to get an official timetable for Daniel Bryan's return, but can confirm that the WWE World Heavyweight Champion is out of surgery and doing well, with strength already returning to his hands.

John Cena vs. Bray Wyatt (Last Man Standing Match)

Bray Wyatt has poached John Cena’s supporters, threatened his legacy and vowed to take him on a trip from which there is no returning. At WWE Payback, the world will see just how far “The Eater of Worlds” is truly willing to go when he and the Cenation leader face off in a Last Man Standing Match.

Reserved for sports-entertainment’s most ferocious grudges, there are no pinfalls, submissions, count-outs or disqualifications in... a Last Man Standing Match. The object of the contest is to incapacitate your opponent to the point he cannot answer the referee’s count of 10, demonstrating just how severe the Cena-Wyatt dispute has become.

Call it sinister brainwashing or altruistic coaxing, the charismatic orator known as Bray Wyatt has obsessively tried convincing Cenation to “follow the buzzards.” The campaign has gained some traction, as more and more WWE fans seem to join the chorus, “He’s got the whole world in his hands.” Declaring himself “God,” Wyatt has pledged to rip away Cena’s supporters while burning down the world, only to rebuild it in his own image.

Yet, the stalwart Cenation leader has made clear that despite Wyatt’s threats, the 14-time World Champion continues to live by the simple maxim expressed on his shirt: Never give up. No matter how down and out he may appear, no matter how many supporters he does or does not have, Cena insists he will never back down.

The upholder of hustle, loyalty and respect has so far endured the head games, but can he silence Wyatt at WWE Payback? Or will buzzards be circling overhead when “The Man of 1,000 Truths,” who claims he’ll be left standing when all else crumbles, gets through with the Cenation leader?

Find out when WWE Payback airs live on WWE Network and pay-per-view Sunday, June 1, at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT.

The Shield vs. Evolution

After toppling Evolution in a wild brawl that had a raucous capacity crowd shouting “This is awesome!” at Extreme Rules, The Shield will have another opportunity to prove themselves when they meet Triple H, Randy Orton & Batista at WWE Payback in a massive rematch.

Since their watershed victory over Evolution, Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins & Dean Ambrose have found themselves placed into one disadvantageous situation after another. On the May 5 edition o...f Raw, then-U.S. Champion Ambrose lost the champion’s advantage when Triple H forced him to defend the title in a 20-Superstar Battle Royal. Sheamus eventually won, ending The Lunatic Fringe’s 351-day title reign. Later that same night, Evolution dealt The Shield a brutal beatdown following The Hounds of Justice’s intense match against The Wyatt Family.

Triple H says Evolution, unlike their opponents, knows what it takes to win a war. Will the terrorizing triumvirate of The King of Kings, The Viper and The Animal defeat in detail and employ a divide-and-conquer strategy to upend The Hounds of Justice? Or will The Shield beat Evolution at their own game, scoring payback for Evolution’s sneak attacks and Triple H’s heavy-handed authority?

See what happens when natural selection takes place before our eyes at WWE Payback on Sunday, June 1, at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT, live on WWE Network and pay-per-view.

Lee Marshall passes away

WWE is saddened by the news that Lee Marshall has passed away.

A gifted broadcaster with an unmistakable voice, Marshall provided commentary for both the AWA and WCW and was a Monday Nitro fixture with his weekly "Road Report." He appeared with WWE for one night only, handling ring announcing duties for the Los Angeles portion of WrestleMania 2. In addition to his contributions to the world of sports-entertainment, Marshall was also the voice of iconi...c cereal mascot Tony the Tiger on Frosted Flakes commercials.

Our deepest condolences go out to Marshall's family, friends and fans.
