Lopon Sonam Dorji, 36, from Tsakaling in Mongar, the umdze (precentor) of Samtencholing Gomdey in Tsakaling, is among the precious few Dzongkha calligraphers in... Bhutan. He is among the finest calligraphers in the country who will soon begin writing Kagyur in gold as part of a historic project initiated by His Majesty the King.
These pictures show some examples of his calligraphy. He will write Kagyur at the speed of two pages a day with a hand-crafted bamboo pen, dipping it in the pure liquefied gold once every two or three letters.
Lopon Sonam Dorji is a self-taught calligrapher. His fascination for calligraphy was born at an early age. At the age of seven, he started collecting soot from his kitchen to make ink to practise writing with a bamboo pen.
Twenty-nine years on, he is in Thimphu committing Lord Buddha’s wisdom to hand-made paper in gold.
