CN Racism, Police brutality, murder, transphobia & misgendering
Warwick Pride stands in solidarity with the Black community across the world. In the past week, ...two black men, George Floyd and Tony McDade, have been murdered by police. These murders are the product of institutionalised racism ingrained in the police force. The role of the police in terrorising and brutalising black communities must be recognised. Those protesting in the US deserve all the material support we can offer to aid them in the resistance against white supremacy.
Black trans people are often at the forefront of this violence. Tony McDade, a black trans man, has been repeatedly misgendered in the media - there’s more information here: https://www.pinknews.co.uk/…/tony-mcdade-florida-police-ki…/.
“Anti-racism is the commitment to fight racism wherever you find it, including in yourself. And that’s the only way forward.” - Ijeoma Oluo

💜Statement from WASS💜
What we are witnessing is the reality of a continuing history in which black people have to fight to exist in a system that is inherently ...antiblack. On Monday the 25th of May, George Floyd was brutally murdered by a white Police Officer. George Floyd was his name and we must never forget it.
As a society, we stand in solidarity and unity with the protesters in Minneapolis, New York, DC, Atlanta and Los Angeles and with the rest of the protesters in America. Protesters are fighting against police brutality and endemic racism at the heart of America; and they are communicating in the only language oppressors understand. They are not the instigators and their presence and pain is heard.
As a society we are speaking out. Any form of silence is complete compliance with a deadly racist structure which killed George Floyd on Monday, Tony McDade on Wednesday, Ahmed Arber in February, Breonna Taylor in March and countless others who we may never know. There is no room for a discourse on white supremacy. There are only two clear cut positions; you are either with Black people and the protestors fighting for their right to breathe or, you are with the white murderers, the racists and the inherently racist structures created to oppress Black people. We are wholeheartedly with Black people who, in the midst of their grieving, have found the strength to take to the streets and protest.
To the white and non-Black Warwick community and the wider UK, educate yourselves. Do not be complicit: use your voice, your privilege to condemn and denounce these actions; use your platform to spread awareness - not violent videos of murdered and injured Black people, do something productive to denounce such actions. Understand your own white privilege & use it productively to support, uplift and protect Black people. In a time like this, silence is deafening and we cannot remain silent.
The discussions the protesters in Minneapolis and the rest of the US have reopened should and will never end. This momentum is the right opportunity for change and we only hope it touches all countries to finally dismantle the systems set up to hurt and silence Black lives. We at WASS are here and ready to continue the conversations and support the change.
George Floyd was his name, racism and specifically antiblackness killed him, and we will never forget it.
Love and Solidarity forever,
Warwick Anti-Sexism Society
