I had just wrapped up setting up and delivering two successful speed mentoring events for women in the law but something was missing. Diversity. Here were these mentees coming to a successful slate of mentors; however, as successful as the slate was, it didn’t reflect the diversity of the mentees. It struck me as a huge gap. These young women needed to see that success looked like them. I was committed in the future that these events would do more than just be mindful of diversity but address them head on.

The biggest name caller in my life has been my dear mother.

I was watching a pregnancy test commercial when I suddenly felt the urge to cry. I felt a sense of loss. Something was missing.

I had never heard of a douche, didn’t know that people actually shaved down there, or that women had a “pee hole.”

How did I find out? My ex-boyfriend.

This summer, my father beat me and threatened to end my life. I responded by scribbling Maya Angelou on all the walls.

So he took me to a psychiatrist, who laughed at my story and attempted to give me medication, which I refused. I was just trying to survive.

Honesty isn’t the same as hurting someone’s feelings, though.

So cut the crap.

I pretended it was nothing, but for the whole day, I was humiliated.

We met during a difficult time in both our lives, but we started dating -
and then got married.

He’s my best friend now, and sometimes I love him, sometimes I hate him.
