Doing better Yeah Okay Alright Good morning everyone. I'm Officer Paul Cruz with Child Police Department. Today we have a very important announcement that we wanna make with everyone and reference to the police Department and so or for us to talk about this further, I'd like to invite chief thanks morning. It's it's just announcing the Grant that maybe got blast week for A federal Grant that really is gonna help us move forward. This Grant is we really I I have to thank Senator Moran's office. I think they were instrumental in helping us get this and the reality is that as we look at our practices and what we're doing there's always room for improvement and never am I too proud to learn from others on on what's happening in across the country. There's been several cities that have had phenomenal success with reducing crime part of this Grant is that replicates successful projects that have been done throughout the country involved Peer to peer learning where we learn from other agencies and other leaders and these police organizations that have had success I am really eager and optimistic to experiment and try new ways to reduce crime and you know I believe that changes necessary and how we respond to crime and I embrace it the focus for me really is reducing violent crime We have seen the last well the last about 67 years. We've seen an uptick in aggravated assaults and shootings this year. Unfortunately, I think some of the some of our efforts is paying off. You know, homicide numbers are down our shootings And we wanna continue to push those numbers in a way that is helpful for our community The the amount of math and drugs that are in our community are also problematic is also focuses on addressing illegal drugs which are a big part of the violent crime that we're facing you know, we have been working closely with our colleagues of the US attorney's office in an effort to have more federal prosecution of our worst defenders because that is a lot of who is driving our crime in Wichita A lot of the same people over and over and over again and we are getting serious with these offenders and we wanna make sure that we're effective Often time you police is the face of the criminal Justice system and crime but the reality is that there is a whole other system out there that helps us that is prosecutors and judges and probation and parole and this is an effort that's gonna bring everybody to the table to make sure that we're being as effective as we can so that's a little bit about the Grant. I want to invite Mike Marshall from Center brands ups to say a couple of words as well and then we can answer some questions if you haven't First on behalf of Senator Moran I would like to congratulate the city of Wichita Mayor Long wheel Chief, Ramsey District Attorney, Bennett and other distinguished officials who's been a part of this process The senator would also like to thank the Department of Justice for supporting which toss efforts to increase public safety and community engagement We are all very proud and excited that which was one of 10 only 10 cities selected for this innovative program The National Public Safety Partnership exemplifies the importance of working together to address Serious crime issues This program uses common sense approaches to effectively fight violent crime and ensure that federal state and local law enforcement have the necessary resources they need to proactively prevent crime what bringing perpetrators to Justice as chairman of the Appropriations subcommittee that funds the US Department of Justice Senator Moran has made it a priority to make certain that law enforcement agencies like the Wichita Police Department have the resources they need to enhance public safety and strengthen the Partnerships that are vital to the health and well being of our communities The senator will continue to remain highly engaged as which is not in the implements this important program and he looks forward to working with you on future initiatives She Fed Congratulations thanks again to Senator Brown's office as well as our US attorney Stephen Caster for helping us get the National Public Safety Partnership program here if you have some questions, I'll be happy to answer them sure Unless this process and what kind of prompted it and then finally hearing that you are part of the program. What was your reaction Yeah. I first heard about the program last summer and spoke with several people at the Department of Justice on it and I was very excited It's a technical assistance program that where they bring experts in to look at our systems and what we're doing and lay it up against best practices to see how we can do better What are some of the specific changes? This is gonna be for the Department Well, we don't know yet Right so we already have made some changes in our response. You know like we Centralize, our community response teams moved away from the old neighborhood Street crimes based unit. The scat teams are now centralized we have I believe that's playing a part in our success in reducing gun violence you know the big effort that many cities have had success with is is driving data using data to reduce crime that is focusing on the worst offenders and their tactics predictive analytics that's predicting crime and Using more technology to improve crime reduction this program a specific amount of time length of time. The three year project Is this problem is going to enable officers to enforce any kind of immigration law No, it has nothing to do with immigration is focuses on violent crime Is it kind of the idea that to find out what works best in many different jurisdictions and see what the best way is to implement that in other jurisdictions? Yes that's that's really one of the big focuses So he said this is a fear of everything we're different departments will communicate with each other. Is there anything specifically that Wichita has been doing that you've been able to share with the other departments you know so I am a part of a Committee that oversees this Well and one of the things that we've volunteers to help others with is more on the community relation aspects you know a lot of what Paul is doing without reach to our various communities. A lot of our community lays on efforts community policing. This is the area that we've offered to help others and we know the money totals of the Grant is coming So it's not it doesn't fund us any money. The it funds the technical assistance of those mothers to help us as Training but it's reimbursed by Department Justice Okay Alright Thanks guys Appreciate it Okay Thank you Alright again we wanna thank all of our partners in the police Department is very proud and happy to announce that we have been chosen for the public Safety Partnership program so again this is important for Wichita and it comes at a time where we need this and so we wanna thank all those that are part of this and have made this possible as well as Those that are working together as the liaisons and folks that are continuously looking at ways to improve. So that's all we have today any other questions outside If you have any information on the vandalism at the Starlight Theatre happened over the weekend I don't I can look at look at what happened there if you could provide me just the date time and be able to look it up anymore. Information on baby no new updated information at this time so if they were I I will talk to investigators to see if we have anything further but there is a changes I will is something that we were gonna be to find the media right away Yeah Totals yet for Riverfest incidents arrest I do have those totals. let me get them for you They want to ask about training on Saturday night One person property As far as specifically are you wanting Sure as far as what occurred of the officers have respond they did find a female had been struck by one of the local trains as far as the reason for why the person was there was still an investigation make something we're trying to investigate we know that the female was transported to an area hospital with critical injuries and this is something that we're currently investigating. We haven't at the time of this and we weren't able to identify the female. I believe we have been able to identify that Write that name later today and she's still hospitalized correct Yes and what's her condition at this point is at this point in time. I don't have the most up to date but when I talked to investigators over the weekend, it was a critical condition And you'll give us updates and correct Thank you Alright, that's all I have for today Thank you very much
