Having fun, but I am learning some hard lessons about level of commitment and how badly I procrastinate. My Profs have been understanding, but the academic demands are no joke...

What William James Has Meant For Me

I came to WJC almost 3 years ago with an undergrad degree in Economics, a career in banking that spilled in management development, a work gap to raise my daughter...s, and a passion for understanding people and elevating their work environment for success. I came here with both excitement and fear for the learning journey that lay ahead after being out of academia for over 20 years and the workforce for 13. It was a comfort to find a program that allowed a choice of blended or online and fulltime or part-time with a rigorous curriculum. From the moment I contacted the school, each department was helpful and encouraging and continued to reach out to offer counsel on the process and my decision.

I spent 2 years in the MA Organizational Psychology program with a variety of cohorts and faculty and the support continued throughout. The shift back to rigorous learning wasn’t easy but I felt supported by the faculty and at the same time each professor provided just the right amount of pressure to move me to a new level of understanding and expression of academic theory and application. I was terrified of writing and through this program, I have sharpened my skills to a point of confidence in expressing myself in a scholarly manner in tackling any subject. One of the great pieces of the program is that you also get concrete experience in applying what you are learning. I was able to complete a field project in an organization that I have connection with and passion for, Fine Arts education in my own community. This experience was so valuable in shaping what it feels like to be a consultant in the field. I have also made lifelong connections with people in my cohort and the faculty. Our continuing discussions about the field and our career experiences are some of my most treasured conversations.

The experience was so profound that when I graduated in August 2015, I immediately entered the Leadership Psychology PsyD program with a whole new sense of excitement and fear about moving from part-time to fulltime, from one 6 week course at a time to two 15 week courses at a time, and a much more demanding curriculum. I am nearing completion of my first year as a doctoral graduate student and it is not for the faint of heart, there have been some bumps and bruises, but I am in love with learning at this institution. I eat, sleep, and breathe my learning and apply it everywhere. I am grateful to be stretched to the edges of my capabilities in a supportive way and I am evolving in ways I never considered would happen with a plethora of opportunities as a teaching assistant in the MA program, co-chairing the alumni association, learning new technology to connect with the community through podcasts and Vlogs, assisting 4th year students with doctoral research projects, etc. The Organizational & Leadership Psychology department is a community where student voices are heard and thoughtfully considered in collaboration with faculty to make the learning experience the best for each student. I am walking through this journey open to all experiences of success and failure even when it is scary because I know they will not let me fall when reaching for new heights. I no longer fear for my future in reentering the workforce at a seasoned age because I am now confident in the value I bring to the table and William James is where I have gained that confidence. I feel at home here, these are my people and I can no longer imagine life without them. If you are looking for that type of learning experience and you are willing to put in the monumental effort it takes, William James is the place for you.

One of the best phases of my life is coming to an end… I am a Year 4 Leadership Psychology (PsyD) student and I felt the need to share this amazing experience with the WJC Community. I was looking for... a Doctorate program for almost 2 years, visited various schools in Washington DC and other states, however all of them appeared to be one-dimensional, i.e. were focusing just on the business side or they were oriented towards clinical psychology. And then I found this one… MSPP back then, that blended both.
Completing this four-year program has been one of the most important journeys in my life, which I would equate it as a child’s first time visit in a theme park. A new world opened in front of me, new horizons, and every corner I turned to there was a new challenge, new knowledge to take on board. Like in a theme park, you may feel that you have just completed a ride, and yet, you turn around the corner, and there is another one for you try.
The learning process is not linear, it’s iterative, you go back in order to be able to move forward, with tough choices along the way. I am leaving this program a different person to what I was when I started it. Nothing in my life is the same as four years ago. During this journey I made some new friends which are going to be for life and I also met many inspiring professionals, without whom, this journey wouldn’t be possible.
Dr. Kathryn Stanley, now Chair of the Department and the Leadership Psychology PsyD program, I was fortunate to be in several of her courses. Without her, I would probably not be able to write these lines today. I have had the honor and fortune to have her as a Chair of my doctoral project. Whatever I write will not be enough to describe the impact she has had on my work and me personally. Always supportive, but at the same time tough and fair, challenging and pushing us to think beyond the obvious and to access deeper meanings.
Dr. Dan Jacobs, another Professor, who I initially had in one of the most valuable and insightful classes. His thought-provoking discussions, feedback, and authentic presence, are a few things that stand out when you interact with him. I was honored to have him as a member on my committee. He believed in me and my project from day 1.
Being based across the pond - in Europe - and having on average 6 hours of time difference did not seem of an obstacle at all. On the contrary, I felt that access, to the library or to other resources and most importantly to the Professors and my colleagues was just in another room of my house. I am already a practising Organizational Development professional and one of the values of this program was the applicability of content to my professional work from ALL the courses we had. I was able to put into application with my clients anything we learned immediately, and to me that’s of great importance.

I also had a sneak preview of the renewed curriculum that Dr. Kathryn Stanley has put together for the next cohorts and I have to admit I felt envious! ☺ I would definitely do this all over again.

My wish is to remain part of the WJC Community and I am “here” if I could ever be of any help to promote its spirit and values.

I have come to rely on MSPP for many of my Continuing Education needs. The presenters and programs have been highly informative and provide ideas I can use immediately in my work. They are inspiring... and set me on way to ask more focused questions for further development. See More
