A reflection on why we crossed the DMZ last year, and why women must continue the long walk for peace in Korea.

Until women get a place in the peace process, we'll take our calls for an end to the Korean War to public streets all over the globe — and even across the DMZ.

On May 28, join thousands of South Korean women and men walk along the southern border of the DMZ calling for a peace treaty and women's leadership in peace building. http://www.wpwalk.kr

One year ago today, 30 women peacemakers made the sojourn across the DMZ from North to South Korea. We called for a peace treaty to end the 63-year old Korean War, reunification of families who have been kept apart for three generations, and women's leadership in the peace building process. Here's some never-before seen photographs taken by the award-winning filmmaker, Gay Dillingham, who was among the all-women delegation.

Speakers:
Gwyn Kirk, Women for Genuine Security (WGS)
Gloria Steinem, Author and Activist

On May 24, 2015 thirty women peacemakers from around the world crossed the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) from North to South Korea calling for the end of Korean War that has divided three generations of Korean families. They walked with 10,000 Korean women on both sides of the DMZ and held peace symposia in Pyongyang and Seoul.

Come learn about this historic women’s peace crossing and the continuing work of Women Cross DMZ and its allies in charting a path for peace on the Korean peninsula, including their latest women’s peace convening in Indonesia amid heightened tensions.

Known as the Forgotten War, the 1950-53 Korean War claimed 4 million lives and ended with a cease-fire. The absence of a peace treaty has left Korea in a state of war, which has led to militarization and repression on both sides of the DMZ.

Suzy Kim, assistant professor of Korean history at Rutgers University and Executive Committee member of Women Cross DMZ, on the history of nuclear weapons on the Korean Peninsula.

"While the start of 2016 may seem bleak for making headway, history should inform decisions today to open up new possibilities. It is only by acknowledging the impact of the Korean War and the Cold War on the present conundrum - and taking concrete steps to overcome historical barriers against the full normalization of relations - that a deal can be reached for North Korea to give up its nuclear program in exchange for a lasting peace settlement in Korea."
