Five minutes with Mandona Chipungu - the dynamic lady behind Dona Chi Designs
The countdown for February's big event, Catwalk Melody, has officially begun.
One of the exciting new designers to feature is Mandona Chipungu, Head Designer for Dona Chi Designs. Shine with inc grabbed a lucky five minutes from Mandona's hectic schedule to discuss Michelle Obama, fashion icons and 2011's biggest fashion don't!
... Dona Chi Designs - if you could summerise your brand in four words, what would they be?
Original: I always create garments that are viewed as timeless pieces, these include my signature capeskirts, reversible dresses and interchangeable waist coats.
Unique: each garment features hand crafted detail and transforms any old clothing into an eye catching outfit.
Confidence: each garment gives its wearer the confidence to step out knowing that they look amazing.
Value: one of Dona Chi Designs' priority is to give it's customers value for money through creating two outfits from one garment, such as my reversible dresses.
Dona Chi Designs is an interesting name, where does it come from?
The name derives from my name Mandona Chipungu. The Dona is from the last four letters in Mandona and Chi is from the first three letters of my second name Chipungu.
How did you get into fashion?
I've always loved fashion, but with a young family (Mandona has three children) I put their needs first before pursuing my own career. Whilst working for a bank in Zambia I used to make my own clothes and then I started to make clothes for family and friends.
After a few years and once my children were slightly older, I decided to attend Middlesex University and achieved a Higher National Diploma in Fashion and Textile Design in 2007. It brings great satisfaction to see a customer's face light-up with excitement when they're wearing one of my designs and you see their inner Diva emerge.
What inspires your designs?
My inspirations come from everyday life.
What can your fans expect to see at Catwalk Melody?
My debut collection is a reflection of my life at present. The collection is called 'Out of the Box', as it describes me showcasing my talent to the world and no longer holding back to pursue my dreams. The collection debuts my signature 'capeskirts', elegant circular dresses and much more.
Which fashion designer inspires you?
Vivienne Westwood, she's one lady that totally thinks outside the box. I love her!
Who is today's fashion icon?
Michelle Obama. She is the queen of simplicity, yet dresses so elegantly.
What is the most significant fashion garment created?
The body sculpture, as it takes those stubborn inches of!
If you could dress any celebratory who would it be?
Michelle Obama. I know without a doubt that she would look spectacular in any Dona Chi Design circular dress.
What was 2011's fashion don't?
Black leggings that could pass for tights - too much exposure!
