Nintendo’s NX system is revealed at long last!!
After months of eager anticipation, Nintendo has finally revealed their dazzling home console, the Nintendo NX. Unlike previous Nintendo consoles, this device can play not only Super Nintendo cartridges, but can also read special discs called “CD-ROMs” which contain many HUNDREDS of megabytes of data. According to Nintendo, these CD-ROM discs will allow game developers to create high-fidelity audio and video content for their games and can store up to 10 minutes of full motion video (FMV).
Games being developed for the NX are still in the very early stages, and only a small handfull of titles were shown to press members behind closed doors. Nevertheless, reactions to what has been shown so far have been overwhelmingly positive, which seems to indicate that Nintendo will have another hit on their hands when the NX launches later this year.
The cartridge/disc hybrid system is the result of a collaboration between Nintendo and television/audio system giant SONY. “We are tremendously excited by our partnership with our friends at SONY,” Nintendo of America president Howard Lincoln said in a statement. “After all, what could possibly go wrong?” he added with a nervous smile, a hint of perspiration forming on his brow.
