#tdih In early October 1937, under the orders of U.S.-backed Dominican dictator President Rafael Trujillo, Dominican soldiers executed more than 20,000 Haitians in what is now known as the Parsley Massacre at Massacre River.
Michele Wucker explains, 'On the Dominican border, Trujillo's men asked anyone with dark skin to identify the sprigs of parsley they held up. Haitians, whose Kreyol uses a wide, flat "R", could not pronounce the trilled "R" in the Spanish word for parsley..., "perejil." Dominicans still refer to the massacre as El Corte, the cutting, alluding to the machetes the Dominican soldiers used...'
A light-skin supremacist trained by U.S. Marines, Trujillo was also influenced by the words of Adolf Hitler. Weeks before the massacre, the Dominican president publicly accepted a gift of Hitler’s Mein Kampf.
The Zinn Education Project offers resources to learn and teach critically about the history of violence born from hateful and racist imaginations. Click the link 👇 to read more from Wucker. #TeachOutsideTextbook
#tdih On Oct. 1, 1851, abolitionists in Syracuse, New York, broke into the city’s police station and freed William “Jerry” Henry, a Black man who had escaped from slavery and was working as a barrel-maker.
It was called the “Jerry Rescue:" A group of Black and white men created a chaotic diversion and managed to free Henry. The first attempt on Oct. 1 failed and Henry was re-arrested, but at his second hearing, his allies overpowered the guards and Henry escaped to Canada.
At the Zinn Education Project👇 learn (and teach) about resistance to slavery -- and liberation from it -- in lessons like 'Poetry of Defiance' and 'Meet the Abolitionists.' #TeachOutsideTextbook
