Alberta Liberal Leader David Khan has released the following statement on the passing of Edmonton jazz pianist and former senator Tommy Banks:

“All of us who knew him were deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former Liberal senator Tommy Banks.

“Tommy Banks was an iconic Edmontonian, Albertan and Canadian who represented the best qualities of our society: kindness, compassion, fairness, generosity, and humour.

...

“A true renaissance man, Tommy was equally skilled and at ease in the worlds of entertainment, politics, philanthropy, and, of course, music.

“An Alberta Liberal stalwart, he was a passionate advocate, a wise statesman, and a confidant to many. He generously donated his time, talents, and finances to causes close to his heart.

“The constant thread woven through the tapestry of his life was an unbreakable determination to improve the lives of others, which was clearly expressed in his dedication to his craft, to supporting his peers, and helping those in need.

“Tommy was my friend and mentor. I will dearly miss him, his counsel, and his friendship.

“On behalf of all Alberta Liberals, I wish to offer my sincerest condolences to his wife, Ida, his family, and loved ones. May he rest in peace.”

Increases to the minimum wage are a hot-topic in Alberta so we're re-sharing our position from the fall.

The key points are:

- We believe we must to take action to address poverty and that action must be taken quickly. As such we support the increase in the minimum wage.

...

-We do not believe the government sufficiently studied the impacts of this increase or policy options to mitigate the unintended negative consequences.

-We support coupling minimum wage policy with other market-friendly solutions and are examing the feasibility of policy alternatives like earned income tax credits and basic income.

Liberal Leader David Khan criticizes the NDP’s blatant hypocrisy on Political Action Committees (“PACs”)—demanding Jason Kenney disclose his PACs’ dark money donors; then, rather than regulating them and requiring transparency and accountability, the NDP create their own shadowy PAC.

“But PACs face no contribution limits and can still accept donations from corporations, unions and out-of-province donors, even after the NDP passed legislation last fall to regulate them.

“Alber...ta Liberal Leader David Khan has criticized the NDP for doing little to crack down on PACs, something he attributes to the fact the party wants PACs of their own.

“Khan said he doesn't buy Wells' argument that people need to hear from a left-wing PAC to counter the messages coming from groups on the right like Unite Alberta.

“”Political parties should be the entities that are promoting those messages," Khan said. "And the money that goes into promoting those messages should be transparent and it should be regulated.

“”And it should be from individuals, not corporations and unions."

“The Liberals introduced a private member's bill to regulate PACs. But the bill died when the NDP introduced some changes to PACs in Bill 32, introduced several days later.”

Alberta needs forward-thinking solutions on childhood mental health.

An estimated 70% of adults with mental illness have recognizable signs in childhood that are inadequately assessed and treated, which led to serious symptoms and disorders in adolescence and adulthood.

The Alberta Liberals have been concerned about the issue of childhood mental health for years. At the 2013 Policy Convention, a policy resolution was passed supporting a bold initiative for a multidisciplinar...y, holistic, and evidence-based approach to prevention, early assessment, and treatment of childhood mental health problems and continue to advocate strongly on this issue.

Our educators and our children are facing a serious and growing problem. The NDP government should be doing more to address it than citing the financial autonomy of school districts and funding for inclusive education initiatives, which needs to cover other support programs such as assisted learning for those with learning disabilities.

Investing in solutions to this problem can better the lives of children today and make for happier and healthier adults tomorrow.

Wishing our Sikh friends a joyful day of celebrations. Today is the 351st birth anniversary of Guru Gobind Singh Ji.

A divine messenger, a warrior, a poet, a philosopher, Guru Gobind Singh molded the Sikh religion into its present shape, with the institution of the Khalsa fraternity, and completion of the sacred scripture, the Guru Granth Sahib, in the final form that we find today.

Before leaving his mortal body in 1708, Guru Gobind Singh decreed the Guru Granth Sahib as the next and perpetual Guru of the Sikhs.
