The annual Local Government Community Satisfaction Survey has been released and has highlighted the importance of reforms introduced in the new Local Government Act.
In the wake of the summer bushfires and coronavirus, the Survey recorded a 2 point statewide drop in 'overall performance' - the most significant change in the survey’s 8 years history.
Each Council that participated has their own results....
Along with highlighting the good work of councils across a wide range of different responsibilities, the survey has raised the need for councils to be more focused on community engagement.
Victorian Government reforms of the Local Government sector in the new Act will increase community confidence and address the concerns raised by the community through improved accountability, complaint handling and community involvement in council decision making.
The statewide score for overall performance was 58 out of 100 with the highest ranked services being arts centres and libraries, appearance of public areas and provision of recreational facilities and the lowest ranked being unsealed roads, slashing and weed control and community decisions.
Following the October 2020 council elections the new Act will require councils to engage more meaningfully with their community including when setting the strategic direction of the council and developing budgets.

Today I released new guidelines to help local councils hold virtual meetings.
This important change will ensure local government decision-making can continue during the coronavirus pandemic.
The new Ministerial Good Practice Guideline applies from 1 May to 1 November 2020 and are available here: https://www.localgovernment.vic.gov.au/…/MGPG-1-Virtual-Mee…
