June - Proper lubrication and cleaning of your garage door will help it run more quietly and last longer. We are often asked what lubricant to use on garage doors. The best product is our garage door lubricant, available at all of our locations, or a general purpose penetrating oil. Do not use WD-40, as it is a Water Dispersant, and does not have the same lubrication properties as a garage door lube. Also, avoid using silicone sprays. Silicone is long-lasting and paint will n...ot adhere to silicone, which might give you problems if you want to paint your garage door sometime in the future.
Lubrication is best done in small sprays, and with a rag to wipe off any excess spray. Excess lube will run down the door and hold dead bugs, which is not the look most people prefer on the inside of their garage door! Sparingly lubricate the hinges and roller stems; a short spray is all that is needed. If you have an exposed torsion spring, run a light stream of spray down the spring with the door in the closed position, then repeat with the door in the open position. Spray may bounce off the spring and stain your wall, so consider using a piece of cardboard to prevent overspray from staining your wall. If you have a Wayne-Dalton Torquemaster™ spring, it is oil coated and then placed in the tube, so no lubrication is needed. As a good reminder, lubricate your door every six months, at the same time you replace the batteries in your smoke detector and change your clocks!

May - Last month we discussed the different types of rollers, and what drives the engineering requirement for roller types. One type of roller that does provide a performance improvement is a white nylon roller. White nylon rollers come in different weight capacities, to match the door weight. White nylon rollers will operate considerably quieter than a black nylon or a steel roller. If you have a bedroom, bonus room or living room over the garage door, ask about options to m...ake your door operate more quietly. The two most significant upgrades you can add to make your system quieter is to go to a belt drive operator with a DC motor, typically about a $75-$100 upgrade over a standard chain drive operator, and to the white nylon rollers.
However, there is one situation in which you may not want a quiet door: you won't be able to hear your teenager sneaking in after curfew!

April-Always remember to wipe the inside of your vertical tracks down once every six months with a damp rag, doing this will remove the dust and dirt that your rollers will pick up as it travels up and down., and remember… do not grease the tracks. The purpose of the rollers on your garage door is to ...roll! Putting grease on the track make the roller more likely to slide, rather than roll.
There are different types of rollers in the industry, each built for different appli...cations. First, all rollers from all manufacturers are designed to run for 50,000 cycles, which should easily be the life of the door. Nylon rollers, typically with a black nylon roller, are the most common roller in the industry. As the door weight goes up, the roller will be upgraded to a metal roller, often with ball bearings for additional weight carrying capacity. Since the original rollers provided with your door are engineered to run for 50,000 cycles, there is no benefit to upgrading to a steel roller. Some disreputable service companies in our industry try to upsell unsuspecting customers on the "need" to go to a heavy duty steel roller, which they will provide for several hundred dollars, and they tell you, comes with a "lifetime guarantee." Chances are very good that your existing rollers are perfectly fine, and paying several hundred dollars for "lifetime guaranteed rollers" is simply a waste of money.
