As part of Alloy Commons Learning Library series, we're making insights available for the benefit of the progressive tech ecosystem. Our latest from Sam Szuflita looks at the challenges of maintaining and rebuilding an up-to-date voter file, and the work done to mitigate pipeline failure and to invest in automation. Read it here: https://medium.com/…/stabilizing-alloys-voter-file-pipeline…
Voter protection organizations are entering a new period of high alert: in the period following elections, mandatory voter file maintenance takes place, and Secretaries of State across the country are reviewing voter rolls to determine who should be dropped from their voter files.
Regular maintenance of the voter file is a good and healthy thing: as time goes on, people move, and people die, and Secretaries of State uphold the responsibility of maintaining an up-to-date list ...of their voters.
However, the course of history has shown that voter roll maintenance can quickly become an agent for voter disenfranchisement: sometimes through honest clerical errors, and sometimes through malicious intent.
Making data on voter file changes transparent and more accessible is paramount to protecting voters from being erroneously dropped. Read our full post on Medium to find out why.
Leading up to the 2020 Election we provided 120 voter protection orgs analysis of voter file changes over time in battleground states. Given the importance of historical data for future analysis, we are making these reports available now. Request them by February 12 to gain access!
