Tell people what you think

Over the past 6 years I written about the loss of my brother Al. You may have known him or may have supported the Al Cantello Jr. Scholarship Fund because you knew our family. In our 7th year (Al’s favorite number) of Al’s Run, I would like to write about who he was – from the perspective of a little sister. Together we could write endless stories that would be sure to make each of us laugh. That’s mostly what he did. He laughed. Instead I will give you a birds-eye-view...

Some of you have seen this picture hanging in my house. I walk by this picture a dozen times a day. This picture is a gift that I would like to share with you.

It was taken Wednesday, July 14, 2011. My mother insisted that our entire family arrive just before sun set to take a family portrait. For those who may not know my mother – she did not “demand” anything. But this was not a request – it was a demand. She relayed that “we all needed to do whatever we had to do” make ourselves and her grandchildren free on this day. This “demand” was her only wish to honor her upcoming 50th wedding anniversary. We all complied. Everybody – all 15 of us - were shockingly on time, at their community beach, in color coordinated outfits. Many pictures were taken by a visiting family friend/photographer that summer evening. Afterward, we all grabbed a liesurely bite to eat at the new Five Guys. More casual photos were taken, conversations were had, jokes were told, cousins laughed…. Aside from holidays – it was really hard to coordinate a night like this. My brother and I were the last to leave. We were still throwing ideas around about how to have a party for my parents Golden Anniversary. My husband and kids were waiting in the car. As I turned to leave, he grabbed and hugged me and said “love you”. We smiled and left.

That was the last time I saw my brother. Four days later, on July 18, 2011, he died in a boating accident near his house.

There are some cultures that have superstitions about family pictures and the bad luck it will bring. I do not believe it. To the contrary, I consider this picture (and the others that were taken that day) a gift from God. Somehow the stars aligned that day…we listened to our matriarch (with an out of character request) and we made this night happen. We laughed, we talked, we have pictures that capture our evening – and my brother said goodbye with a “love you”. This night happened for a reason. Thank you God. There are no regrets. That helps. The grief is always present - but we hold on to this gift - and we hold on to it tight.

This year Al’s Run will be held on the Western Shore – Anne Arundel Community College, October 16 . It will be a 5k – and it will continue to award worthy students who play lacrosse – scholarships in memory of my brother – Al Cantello, Jr. Al’s Run is our memorial honor, our grave site, our legacy to him. We hope that you can spend your morning with us not only supporting our passion – but remembering your own gifts.

Sincerely - xoxo – Karen Cantello O’Kane
