I'm on the New York Times Book Review's podcast today, talking about Jane Austen and Among the Janeites. (My part is from roughly 1:30-16:00.)

Deborah Yaffe talks about “Among the Janeites,” and Robert Ferguson discusses “Scandinavians: In Search of the Soul of the North.”

Exciting news -- Among the Janeites has earned a coveted slot in the New York Times Book Review, a mere four years after publication. (Go figure. . .) Reviewer Jane Smiley, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of A Thousand Acres, calls the book a "playful exploration of Austen obsession. . . . amusing and sometimes mind-boggling," with a "light but precise" tone.

From the role-playing of modern Janeites to the theatrical performances that inspired Austen’s own work, three books explore her roots and her legacy.

One of the people profiled in Among the Janeites -- Austen scholar and roller-derby enthusiast Devoney Looser -- will be speaking this Thursday at the New York Public Library. Devoney's highly entertaining new book, The Making of Jane Austen, is about fanatical Janeites of the pre-Colin Firth era. Hope to see you at her talk!

This illustrated lecture tells new stories about how Jane Austen (1775-1817) was made into an international literary icon in the two centuries after her death. Events at The New York Public Library may be photographed or recorded. By attending these events, you consent to the use of your image and...

An excerpt from Among the Janeites on NJ Spotlight, a web site which covers the Garden State. . .

Zombies, handsome British hunks in breeches, successful movies, piles of DVDs — why is this 19th century British author ‘equally welcome at Yale and on YouTube’?

My thoughts on Jane Austen's "Lady Susan" and Whit Stillman's adaptations of it, in First Things:

His adaptation of Lady Susan downplays a key fact: Austen’s women jockey among themselves for status and power. Men may be the prizes, but they’re not the point.

A preview of my upcoming talk in Princeton, from my local weekly newspaper.

Jane Austen’s writing has never been out of print. On top of that, legions of admirers are producing their own Austen-inspired fan fiction.
