Oxford has been an important place in the United Kingdom since it was founded by Anglo-Saxons in the 8th Century. Militarily, it’s been important to King Æthelread’s massacre of the Danes, the Norman Invasion, and the English Civil War. Since the 12th Century, it’s been known primarily as an academic center of the Western World thanks to Oxford University and with that has come a wealth of literature about one of England’s most famous cities.
