MEDIA RELEASE “No one can predict the moment of the climate revolution” It is said that a revolutionary mind is an open mind, a mind that is committed to no opinions. Planetary betterment requires a shift in every mindset, from that belonging to a person watching on from the sidewalk as a climate rally passes them to that of a seasoned climate activist. The trajectory of the climate justice movement requires re-imagining for the survival of our planet and all life that inhabits it. In the same breath that we discuss fossil fuels, we should also be tackling animal agriculture or we’re missing a big part of the problem – and a big part of the solution. Animal agriculture is choking the Earth. Animal Activists Australia is running a campaign to address the interconnectedness of earth, human and animal liberation struggles. As part of the Climate Crisis: National Day of Action held around Australia, the campaign resulted in addressing the impact of animal agriculture on the climate and the environment with demands aimed at the government to provide further support for animals affected by the fires in the Geelong region. The support of this campaign has been strengthened by the newly formed Animal Rights Alliance, consisting of various groups including Animal Activists Australia, Animal Save Australia, Aussie Farms, Geelong Against Live Export and Vegan Demolition Crew – an alliance we hope to extend into future campaigns. On the day of the rally, the words of the appointed speaker for the topic of this campaign, Andy Meddick MP from the Animal Justice Party Victoria and a well-respected animal advocate, have reverberated throughout Geelong in order to sound the alarm on the devastating impact that animal agriculture has on our climate and how it also affects other animals we share this earth with too. Given the climate emergency, activists used diversified tactics to drop a large banner reading “Animal agriculture is choking the Earth” from the multi-level car park of Market Square, bringing attention to the substantial impact animal agriculture has on the earth. Even though security guards from Market Square car park tried to remove the banner, the climate activists persisted and were able to get the urgency of this message across. Onlookers stood by in awe as the climate rally roared in the background. Climate activists should be aware of the significant impact that animal agriculture has on the climate crisis. The climate science is undeniable and clearly points at animal agriculture as a leading cause of climate change, water and land usage, water pollution leading to dead zones, ocean acidification, deforestation and biodiversity loss leading to the sixth mass species extinction. This is the inconvenient science. Michelle Crilly from Geelong Against Live Export has said, “Animal Agriculture has devastating effects on the environment. Add the compounding effect of greenhouse gasses caused by transporting animals who are farmed around the world using trucks, planes and ships, and the carbon footprint of each individual animal continues to climb.” There are some moments when the planetary crisis is acutely felt. “In the wake of the devastating bushfires, we seek out P2 masks, witness a wave of climate refugees overflowing onto beaches, inhale smoke filled air even whilst we sleep, hear reports of yet another human fatality and watch on as animals die in their billions. Yet, the climate movement broadly remains silent on an integral part of the climate change equation – the impact of animal agriculture”, says Gia Soupos of Animal Activists Australia. “It is imperative that governments acknowledge the impact animal agriculture has on our changing climate. There needs to be a focus on supporting farmers to transition to more sustainable and ethical pathways”, says Alix Livingstone of Aussie Farms. “This issue of animal agriculture has finally been placed on a platform that has ignored its necessary inclusion for decades and we are thrilled to be a part of the progress. In the face of a Climate Emergency, if we do not address animal agriculture right now, by the time we have achieved 100% renewable energy, animal agriculture would’ve destroyed everything and by then it would be too late. Animal agriculture isn’t only one of the leading causes of climate change but its devastating mass scale impact on the environment is worse than any other industry”, states Rochelle Van Heerden of Animal Activists Australia. The chants from animal rights activists regarding animal agriculture’s calamitous impact on the climate will continue to echo through the streets of the Geelong region and beyond. Climate activists from the animal rights space are powering the climate movement from the frontlines and behind the scenes. We are mobilizing and definitively saying that the time for climate science denialism is over. Beyond the ethical considerations, the animal agricultural industry and its powerbrokers will not hold our climate hostage. This may just be the moment of the climate revolution. The Climate Crisis: National Day of Action Geelong commenced at 10:30am Saturday, February 22 at Transvaal Square, Eastern Beach Rd, Geelong.

BREAKING: Whistleblowers expose Queensland dairy farm.

The struggling farm, Gamble Family Dairy Farm, is up against uncontrollable natural forces and is an inherently unsustainable operation in which animals’ rights are routinely denied.

We are experiencing severe impacts of climate change, Australia suffers from the worst drought conditions we have ever seen, and so the dairy industry certainly does struggle. But, unavoidably so? It was 9 years ago, now, since the UN’s 2010 ...report asserting that to sustain the human population, we must make the shift towards a meat and dairy-free diet, those industries revealed to be responsible for 70% of freshwater consumption and 38% of the land use, globally. Yet, government grants and supermarket levies are still issued to prop up this economically unviable and environmentally destructive industry.

Who suffers as a result of this? Certainly, farmers do. But no one is more susceptible to suffering in this industry than those whose moral value is disregarded so that the commodification of their milk can be justified, those whose welfare is entirely at the discretion of their “owners”. The animals are the true victims here.

To remain competitive, standard operation is necessarily cruel; requiring repeated impregnation of mother cows, only to have the male, as well as excess female, calves sent to slaughter after 5-7 days. As financial conditions worsen, the welfare of the animals becomes a lower priority. At Gamble’s dairy, cows have, for years, been left to starve to death. The mandatory 5-7 days of care becomes an unnecessary cost, and calves, especially the males, are killed at birth, left to die in the harsh weather, or given away, illegally transported on the back of a trailer with their legs bound.

Frustrated workers are seen taking their angst out on the animals they and their industry see only as property, dragging newborns by their legs and even ears, kicking them if they attempt escape. To deny animals their inherent moral rights is rationally indefensible. The price of reducing animals to property status is high for the animals, whose welfare then lies entirely in the hands of people who seek to use them to retain survivable profit margins. Unsurprisingly, operations move closer towards cruelty than stewardship in the face of economic challenges.

What can we do to help you might ask?

STOP BLACK DEATHS IN CUSTODY

30 YEARS SINCE THE ROYAL COMMISSION | STILL NO JUSTICE

Today we stand in solidarity with the Warriors of the Aboriginal Resistance - WAR and all First Nations people at the Stop Black Deaths In Custody protest + march in Naarm (so-called Melbourne).

...

April 15 marks 30 years since the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody final report was tabled in parliament in 1991. The report made 339 recommendations to prevent further Aboriginal deaths in custody.

The central principles in the final report were the need for Aboriginal self-determination, an end to racist control by the state and stopping the obscene numbers of Aboriginal people being taken into custody. None of the core recommendations have ever been implemented.

Since the report was released, there have been more than 440 Aboriginal deaths in custody - 5 of which have occurred in the last 2 months alone.

We have the highest rates of incarceration of any Indigenous people in the world, with Aboriginal women recognised as the highest prison population group in the country.

Remember, no police officer has ever been held criminally responsible for an Aboriginal death in custody.

We are on the streets as allies to demand justice and self determination for First Nations people.

The killer is the deeply entrenched racism of the white supremacist colonial state that tries to erase 60,000 years of civilisation here before 1788 and systematically criminalises and kills Indigenous people.

This is systematic genocide.
