Interesting changes coming out of the US. The FBI has added Animal Cruelty to the list of Class A felonies, alongside homicide and arson.
What do you think? Is animal cruelty as serious as murder of a human?

ACCC works under a Capacity for Care Model.
Achieving capacity for care involves creating humane space as well as developing and implementing programs that allow the facility to function at a level where every animal has the Five Freedoms of Animal Welfare.
The Five Freedoms of Animal Welfare, developed by the Farm Animal Welfare Council for minimum level of care expected for any animal in confinement:
... - Freedom from hunger and thirst
- Freedom from discomfort
- Freedom from pain, injury, or disease
- Freedom from fear and distress
- Freedom to express normal behavior
We are not the "pound" of yester-years.

Great news! Our very last Fort McMurray animal has left our building. All the animals we had in care where handed over by lucky owners who were able to evacuate with them. Not everyone was as lucky though.
If you know of someone still looking for a Fort McMurray pet, please share this Alberta SPCA message so they know where to look and are aware of an upcoming deadline.

...Fort Mac Animal Evacuee Update
The project to return animals to people who were forced to leave them behind during the evacuation of Fort McMurray has been incredibly successful. As of Sunday, June 19, fewer than 100 animals remained to be reunited with their owners. That’s just 8% of the total number of animals the Alberta SPCA took into custody.
Throughout the animal reunion process, the Alberta SPCA has been sympathetic towards the upheaval the fire caused many people. We know that some animal owners still aren’t in a position to care for their animals themselves. Together with our partner agencies, the Alberta SPCA has tried to help owners find temporary boarding for their animals if they needed it. Many individuals and animal rescue organizations throughout Alberta have offered temporary animal fostering for those in need. Many of these offers are still available to owners who haven’t yet claimed their animals.
It’s been more than a month since the Alberta SPCA received the last animal evacuee. In the interest of the long-term welfare of the remaining animals, we have decided that any animals not claimed by Thursday, June 30, will be signed over to animal adoption agencies, which can start looking for permanent homes for them.
Final attempts to contact all the owners who haven’t yet claimed their animals will be completed before we officially transfer ownership on June 30.
All unidentified animals are listed in Wood Buffalo’s Animal Control in-care gallery (http://www.rmwb.ca/…/By…/Animal-Control-Services/Gallery.htm).
Anyone with questions should contact the Alberta SPCA at info@albertaspca.org.

How many calls does it take for our Tracing Staff to connect an animal to its' owner? As many as it takes!
In this case, TEN different contact points before the owner was found. As long as the animal is in our care, our tracing team is trying to get them home. Turns out, Marley had been missing for a full month and lived in Thorhild at the time!
Don't ever give up hope and make sure your pet has ID with current contact information. It is the only way to quickly identify ...you as the rightful owner.
How cute are these two?

As you have likely heard, Quebec City is putting a pit bull ban in place that will force owners to get rid of their pit bulls by January. Grandfathering will not be considered. The City of Edmonton does not have a breed specific ban but we do have a Restricted Dog classification.
Restricted Dog means any dog that has:
- chased, attacked or bitten any person or animal causing physical injury and resulting in a conviction under this bylaw
- chased, attacked or bitten any pers...on or animal on more than one occasion, with or without causing physical injury, and resulting in separate convictions under this bylaw
- been made the subject of an order under the Dangerous Dogs Act
Restricted Dogs require:
- a valid Restricted Dog license costing $250 annually
- one million dollar liability insurance specifically covering any damages for personal injury
- a fully enclosed pen or muzzled and secured by a chain fixed to the property that prevents the Restricted Dog from coming closer than two metres to the apparent boundary of the property
- a muzzle and full, owner control when off property
What are your thoughts on these two ways of dealing with dangerous dogs?

We have come across some social media misinformation about the age an animal needs to be licensed. As per City Bylaw, cats and dogs need to be licensed as of six months of age. The license fee for an altered dog is $36 and an altered cat license is $21.
City tags are a fantastic form of identification so many responsible owners choose to license their pet even when under six months of age. In this case, the six month puppy/kitten licence is free.
To license your pet visi...t edmonton.ca/pets or in person at 13550 163 St.
What reasons have you heard as to why someone DOESN'T license their pet?

The Urban Hens Extended Pilot Project is well under way.
Urban Hen Keeping Procedures and Guidelines have been developed to help residents understand what is required to be a safe and successful hen keeper. There are restrictions on coop size, number of animals, maintenance, standard of care and waste disposal. Licensee(s) also need to make themselves available for site and animal inspection by an Animal Control Peace Officers.
Are you interested in being an Urban Hen Keeper?

As summer heats up, be a responsible pet owner by keeping your pet out of a dangerous situation, such as in a hot vehicle. It’s best to leave your pets at home if you are stopping anywhere for any length of time. Leaving car windows cracked open on a hot day does not stop a vehicle from overheating.
Should you encounter an animal left in a hot vehicle, call 911 ONLY if the animal is in distress. Identify signs of distress using the 3PT rule, 3Ps and 3Ts which include:
Pan...ting excessively (heavily and loud)
Purple or dark pink tongue
Possible loss of bowels, diarrhea
Thick saliva from excessive drooling
Tired/lethargic dog
Trying to escape vehicle or frantically barking
Call 311 if the animal is not in distress — you will be transferred to our dispatch centre.
