Message from Mariela Gomez, ASI President, on DACA
The decision to rescind the Deferred Action on Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program is extremely disappointing. It is my responsibility as your ASI President to represent the entire student body including those who are undocumented. I pledge to support all students at CSUB including those who are undocumented dreamers.
Now is the time for Congressional Leadership to act and create a long-term solution. Congress now... has six months to legislate a solution to preserve DACA or fund an alternative program.
ASI is asking YOU to join us and get involved. We need each of you to call your Representatives and Senators and urge them to act.
ASI will be hosting open office hours every day from 11 am – 1 pm at the ASI office in the Student Union for you to drop by and use the phones to call our legislators. We also have resources for you to pick up if you want to call on your own.
Join us and HAVE YOUR VOICE HEARD!!!

Former ASI President, Alex Dominguez, wrote an opinion piece for The Bakersfield Californian regarding DACA and its importance to so many of our students and community members within this state and this nation. Thank you for your support, Alex!
Hey runners! Here is a message following up about commencement from your current ASI President:
" Your voice has been heard!
Today, the University President, Dr. Horace Mitchell, agreed to change Commencement. The new layout is as follows: there will be two separate ceremonies. The first ceremony will be at 7:00am consisting of A&H, BPA, and NSME. The second ceremony will be at 12:00pm consisting of SSE. There will be a reception following each ceremony. There will also be ...seating inside of the Icardo Center for family members and guests who wish to avoid the heat.
The University Administration told you, the students, that tickets would not be an issue. When the Administration tried to go back on their word, your ASI held them accountable.
It's my honor to fight for each and every student of CSU, Bakersfield!
If you have any further questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Go Runners! "
Hey runners! Here is a message from your current ASI President in regards to commencement:
"Today I met with the entire Academic Senate and the Vice President of Student Affairs, Dr. Wallace in regards to the abrupt changes to commencement.
I am proud to say that the entire Academic Senate voted unanimously to request that the University President hold an Emergency Commencement Planning Meeting to provide an immediate resolution to this issue....
During my meeting with Vice President Wallace, we had a very constructive conversation. Together, we walked to the soccer field where commencement will take place. He informed me that over 17,000 guests have RSVPd and the soccer field only holds 10,000 attendees. We both discussed the layout and how we can fit more guests in the area in the most safe and efficient manner.
This Emergency Commencement Planning Meeting has yet to take place but will be held ASAP. At this meeting I will have the full support of the Academic Senate in fighting for the best possible outcome for our graduating students. There are several alternatives on the table such as allocating more tickets. I ensure you that I will fight for more while keeping the students' dollar in mind.
Please share this message and stay in tune for more information from that emergency meeting. "
