As the final work day of 2017 comes to an end, I want to give HUGE thanks to our amazing, dedicated, talented team at ASF! Thank you for the incredible work you do every day to support the autism community. Thank you also to our wonderful volunteers and generous donors; we could not do the work we do without you! Thanks also to all the talented scientists who have dedicated their careers to autism research! I am so grateful to be working with all of you and I'm looking forward to seeing everyone in 2018!

It's been an eventful 2017 for #autism #science! We have a year-end science summary on our blog (https://autismsciencefoundation.wordpress.com) thanks to many families and researchers, like the Rolston family. You still have time to contribute to help fuel the science that impacts lives like theirs. Donate now at https://recipe4hope2017.causevox.com
Happy Festivus from the Autism Science Foundation! In case you missed it, there were dozens of new scientific findings in the field of autism this year with the hope of improving the lives of people with autism. From better identifying subgroups for more personalized interventions, to using big data to answering questions like how genetics and the environment interact, to helping adults with employment and sexuality challenges. It might be hard to see what progress has bee...n made in the last decade, but it is only through the commitment of the public that research has moved as fast as it has. But we need more. We need more people to participate in research. We need more people to understand the importance of science. And finally, we need more people to support science approaches for helping #autism. Please consider supporting autism research through the Recipe4Hope: https://recipe4hope2017.causevox.com
See MoreAre you an undergraduate who wants to volunteer for the Autism Science Foundation and work with the organization on an important scientific project? Do you go to school outside NYC and have been looking for an opportunity to work with us? Do you need flexible hours and are interested in learning important skills? We have a great opportunity for you! ASF is looking for volunteer interns to work remotely on science initiatives that have a high potential to affect the community. Please send your CV to ahalladay@autismsciencefoundation.org before January 1st.
Read our full summary of this year’s #autism #science on our blog today! From #heterogeneity to #BigData and studies on #females and #employment, thanks to all the families and researchers that made this all possible! https://autismsciencefoundation.wordpress.com/…/the-big-h-…/
How do people with #autism perceive? It can be more difficult to perceive when there are more disturbances. According to research co-led by ASF Grantee Woon Ju Park of University of Rochester in Scientific Reports, increased internal noise from the nervous system and reduced filtering of external noise play roles in perceptual abilities in ASD. Additionally, internal noise may be a contributing factor in the variability in ASD symptoms. Read the #openaccess research here: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-017-17676-5
ASF's #podcast reflects on the #autism #science and #research highlights of the year, especially #heterogeneity, #BigData, and studies on #females, thanks to all the families and researchers that made this all possible! http://asfpodcast.org/?p=443
What kind of research does ASF fund? Research that helps #parents and #teachers communicate better so they both can support children with #autism better.
You can support them, too, by donating now to https://recipe4hope2017.causevox.com/

Your year-end donation to ASF can help in so many ways. By helping a scientist get a strong start to their career. By helping fuel the #science on #autism. By helping improve the lives of people on the spectrum.
We are proud to announce Anne Roux of the AJ Drexel Autism Institute as the recipient of our latest Research Accelerator Grant. Ms. Roux's research, currently funded by the Organization for Autism Research, focuses on the study of how the use of vocational rehabilitation services influences employment outcomes on a state by state level for youth with #autism. The ASF accelerator grant will allow her team to characterize the new programs emerging from the Workforce Innovation ...and Opportunity Act (#WIOA) on a state by state basis, and will establish metrics of autism-specific practices in each state. The accelerator funding will speed up the ability to identify what higher-performing states are doing well and inform the development of autism-specific practice guidelines. We are excited to see what insights Ms. Roux's work will bring for the autism community! See our official press release here: http://autismsciencefoundation.org/…/m…/press-releases/4547/
You too can help improve employment outcomes for the autism community by participating in the ASD Employment Survey of the Social Competence & Treatment Lab - SCTL. Your input will help us craft a policy brief on the employment needs of those with autism. Please feel free to share! http://www.lernerlab.com/employmentsurvey.html
At this crazy, end of year fundraising time, we are reminded of the wise and true words of CAN founder Jon Shestack; "If you don't ask, you don't get". So we're asking. We have so many great grant applications that NEED to be funded. Please donate to ASF so that our families can benefit from research. Every dollar counts! Thanks in advance! www.recipe4hope.org
This week’s #ASFpodcast catches some waves. Researchers led by Dr David Menassa of the University of Southampton and the University of Oxford explore gamma waves in the brains of autistic adults who perform better on a visual processing task than those without a diagnosis. Gamma waves are controlled by the coordinated activity of neurons in the brain, which are regulated by inhibitory interneurons which make sure excitatory neurons aren’t taking over. In a study using brain tissue of people with autism, it was found by another study at Oxford that there are fewer of these inhibitory interneurons to control this activity. Dr. David Menassa provides his own interpretation of the data on this week’s podcast, which you can listen to here: http://asfpodcast.org/?p=440
“I have only positive things to say about ASF’s grant program, leadership, and scientific board. I am glad that ASF is interested in a broad range of research areas, including public health. … I am extremely grateful for this opportunity and proud to be a recipient of this grant.” - Mathew Maenner (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), ASF Grantee ‘10
