Read the articles, the scientific studies, watch Nova. Believing that vaccines are causing autism is on par with belief that area 52 houses aliens, that jet trails are government tests on what poisons... work best to kill us, that we descended from aliens. It is far more likely that there are other causes, such as human use of chemicals on a massive scale, intense use of electronics in our lives, or a million other things may have some relationship to it. Please, let's focus on the real and leave the wild stories to others - and you all know who I am talking of. See More

I'm very disappointed with the direction ASF has taken. I found the initial genetic research to be helpful in establishing the intrinsic and familial nature of autistic traits. However, the genetic re...search has become obsessive and is being used now to potentially "protect both boys and girls" from autism, not to accept that autistic traits have always been with humans and have occasionally contributed to advancing society.

ASF does not accept that autistics can lead full and happy lives without conforming to "normal" allistic behaviors and desires. ASF wants autistics to fake their way through life and consider their true nature to be inferior rather than accept and accommodate their differences. Therapy that helps a person move through the world more easily is great, but therapy that strives to erase a person is cruel. Acceptance that your kid might not ever be (or WANT to be) the perfect doll you fantasize about is part of being a loving parent. Even allistic kids break their overcontrolling parents' hearts by choosing their own course.

I would very much like to see ASF increase research into programs that help autistics become part of society without stigmatizing autistic traits. Even allistics use etiquette books, interview skills articles, advice columns, life coaches, counselors, etc. to give them a boost when their own social skills need fine tuning. Those people aren't stigmatized for being themselves on their own time. They get to fly their freak flag and have whatever life goal they want. Autistics should be offered the same respect.

Autism Science Foundation is better than the other medical charity organizations and has the most potential to do much better in listening, interacting with, and finding the help Autistic people need.... Let's begin to have that conversation to improve ASF! This way Autistic and non-autistic cultures can live and be a supporting community together. Keep on doing ASF and always listen to the voices of Autistic people. See More

The Tomatis Method at a Glance

Apart from its main function of cortical charging, otherwise referred to as cerebral stimulation, Tomatis method can have a positive impact on selective attention. The ...procedure mainly relies on electronic gating, which brings about a perceptual sound contrast aimed at surprising the brain so that it stays attentive and awake. The main goal is to assist the brain to develop an automatic mechanism for detecting sound and changes which will ultimately reinforce selective attention. All these factors make Tomatis method ideal for people living with autism, ADHD and problems associated with learning difficulties.

Tomatis Method for People with Hearing Problems

Tomatis Method for people with hearing problems is more or less like the one used for people with ADHD and Autism. The program consists of a sensory stimulation program in which a patient listens to electronically filtered and modified music through a headset. The content used is mainly soft classical music by Mozart or Gregorian chant. The mother’s voice or the patient’s own voice can also be used. The sound is then modified by a device known as the Electronic Ear. By means of sound amplifiers, sophisticated gating mechanism and filters, the sound is slowly reshaped and presented in a specific pattern to the ears in rapidly alternating forms.

Case study

One of my clients, who is a musician, lost her hearing in her left ear and later developed oversensitivity in the right ear. Her case was extremely difficult. I used the Tomatis method, and after the first couple of days her sleeping improved, she was more relaxed. Very quickly her hearing improved, and oversensitivity decreased. The turning point was on the day 8, when she could hear the telephone conversation in her left ear.

She emailed me: "HUGE progress. I can now hear (and understand!) people on the phone in my L ear. Faint but definitely audible". I am really happy that I can help people

Tomatis Method for People with Emotional Disorders

For people with emotional disorders like depression, Tomatis method acts on the limbic system which is found in the medial part of the brain. The part is where the auditory system is linked. It is also responsible for mechanisms of learning, memory and emotion. An organ known as the cochlea, located in the middle of the ear plays the role of cortical charger. The connection comes about when the Tomatis method acts on the prefrontal cortex and limbic system. The method simply intervenes in the regulation and ultimate control of emotional disorders that are related to anxiety and depression. It also regulates one’s stress levels. Tomatis method can also be used in other problems like psychomotor difficulties, improvement of voice and musicality, preparation of childbirth and Pervasive Development Disorder.

I am a doctoral student recruiting participants to complete a web questionnaire for my dissertation entitled ”Factors Associated with Quality of Life of Mothers of Children with Autism Spectrum Disord...ers.” I am seeking English literate mothers (over the age of 18), residing in the United States, who have children with Autism Spectrum Disorders. Your participation in this research offers no benefit to you but could serve to enhance the quality of life of mothers who have children with ASDs. The following link will take you to the survey, which consists of approximately 60 questions and could be completed in 20-30 minutes:

Happy Festivus from the Autism Science Foundation! In case you missed it, there were dozens of new scientific findings in the field of autism this year with the hope of improving the lives of people with autism. From better identifying subgroups for more personalized interventions, to using big data to answering questions like how genetics and the environment interact, to helping adults with employment and sexuality challenges. It might be hard to see what progress has bee...n made in the last decade, but it is only through the commitment of the public that research has moved as fast as it has. But we need more. We need more people to participate in research. We need more people to understand the importance of science. And finally, we need more people to support science approaches for helping #autism. Please consider supporting autism research through the Recipe4Hope: https://recipe4hope2017.causevox.com

How do people with #autism perceive? It can be more difficult to perceive when there are more disturbances. According to research co-led by ASF Grantee Woon Ju Park of University of Rochester in Scientific Reports, increased internal noise from the nervous system and reduced filtering of external noise play roles in perceptual abilities in ASD. Additionally, internal noise may be a contributing factor in the variability in ASD symptoms. Read the #openaccess research here: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-017-17676-5

We are proud to announce Anne Roux of the AJ Drexel Autism Institute as the recipient of our latest Research Accelerator Grant. Ms. Roux's research, currently funded by the Organization for Autism Research, focuses on the study of how the use of vocational rehabilitation services influences employment outcomes on a state by state level for youth with #autism. The ASF accelerator grant will allow her team to characterize the new programs emerging from the Workforce Innovation ...and Opportunity Act (#WIOA) on a state by state basis, and will establish metrics of autism-specific practices in each state. The accelerator funding will speed up the ability to identify what higher-performing states are doing well and inform the development of autism-specific practice guidelines. We are excited to see what insights Ms. Roux's work will bring for the autism community! See our official press release here: http://autismsciencefoundation.org/…/m…/press-releases/4547/

You too can help improve employment outcomes for the autism community by participating in the ASD Employment Survey of the Social Competence & Treatment Lab - SCTL. This week’s #ASFpodcast catches some waves. Researchers led by Dr David Menassa of the University of Southampton and the University of Oxford explore gamma waves in the brains of autistic adults who perform better on a visual processing task than those without a diagnosis. Gamma waves are controlled by the coordinated activity of neurons in the brain, which are regulated by inhibitory interneurons which make sure excitatory neurons aren’t taking over. In a study using brain tissue of people with autism, it was found by another study at Oxford that there are fewer of these inhibitory interneurons to control this activity. Dr. David Menassa provides his own interpretation of the data on this week’s podcast, which you can listen to here: http://asfpodcast.org/?p=440
