Music warms the heart and for many people it is an important part of daily life. Some rely on music to get them through the morning commute, others turn up a favorite playlist during a workout. For Ian Dones Rivera, music reminded him of home, college and his violin. Ian moved to Massachusetts with his parents and his brother after Hurricane Maria devastated his family home and the community where they lived in Puerto Rico. Now a member of the Environmental Service team at Baystate Wing Hospital, for the second year, Ian offered to play his violin for the patients on the Geriatric-Psych In-Patient Unit where he often worked. “I have been taking lessons every Saturday to learn some Christmas music so that I could play a few special songs for our patients,” Ian said. “While I was practicing I was thinking that I wanted the patients and my work friends to know that I cared about them.” Ian’s concert stirred memories and quickly brought a smile to everyone’s face, soon everyone was singing along, creating a touching moment for all. Thank you Ian for playing your violin for our patients and for caring so much. #EnhancingLives
