Usually go to Bugglin Bull but due to the holiday, wait was too long. Stopped by and there was plenty of room, very friendly, attentive staff and the food was good. Two taco salads, one chicken, one ...beef and Chicken and Hatch green chili taquitos. Enjoyed our meal. See More

The staff is friendly, the food is outstanding and truly authentic. Hoping that the manager, Jack, can find a recipe for the avocado salsa to post. This is a place I will drive the 400 miles to revisi...t.
Thank you to our server, Kim, for your cheerful service and smile.

Consistently the best fish tacos I've ever had, and they have this particularly awesome hostess named Taylor, too! Top notch place!

I'd go here again in a heartbeat. I had the fish/shrimp tacos. All I can say is EXCELLENT!!!

The manager stopped by to say hello and told us a little about the staff. No Tapatio on the table, but qu...ickly rectified by the manager.

If in Custer, eat here...

There were two in our party and both ordered enchiladas. Both had to be sent back because they were cold. There was another person sitting next to us who also had to send her food back for the same ...reason. After we got the food back it was warmer but definitely not authentic Mexican. Very bland and tasteless. We talked to another family that had eaten there and they had the same experience. The bartender was good, but other than that you have better options in Custer. I don't recommend this place. See More

The other reviews must be friends and family.
Take it from this foodie don't bother. When asked by the manager how the food was , I told him the chili rellano was soggy. He said so good then..... was... more is there to say after that response. The enchiladas were made with flour tortillas, the salsa tastes like Campbell's tomato soup it was even warm. There was really no authenticity See More

I am a self-employed architectural design engineer. As such I have traveled, with my wife, to all corners of the US and parts of Europe. Over the past 30 years we have experienced some of the finest... restaurants in America and Europe. We have greatly enjoyed the authenticity of the Begging Burro's Mayan Mexican cuisine but more so have enjoyed the amazing service we receive from the excellent professional servers who are gracing Custer's dining scene while here during Cancun's off-season, where they are regularly full-time employees of 5-star resorts.

It takes almost no time to notice that there is something different about these professional Mexican servers. It seems their very culture has taught them a level of respect rarely seen in America. Their professional experience shows in the way they tend quickly to your every need, whether a spicier hot sauce, extra guacamole, sour cream, or a beverage refill. They are always at hand but never intrusive or interrupting. I have seen such a level of professional serving very rarely in my life. One such time was at The Signature Room on the 95th floor of the John Hancock Building in Chicago, where I was entertained by a large specialty contractor, along with my clients: a fortune-100 company and one of the world's largest architectural firms. One difference is that the dinner at the Hancock Building was over $100 per plate, while the Begging Burro's average dinners are priced at $10-15. Another difference was that the servers at the Begging Burro are happier, more friendly, and more personable, without being less attentive to your needs.

My wife and I enjoy dining out 2-5 times per week.sometimes twice a day. One of the reasons my wife and I enjoy living in Custer is the variety of restaurants made possible by the tourist industry here in the Black Hills. We have enjoyed frequent dining at the Custer State Park Resort restaurants, most of the the restaurants in Custer and Hill City, and the major restaurants in Rapid City. But since we discovered the Begging Burro, this summer, we rarely eat anywhere else.

Victor and Alfredo are my personal favorites but Bernice, Alfonzo, Clay, and David are all friendly, excellent servers. Angel's Mayan-Mexican cooking is out-of-this world. He, too is always accommodating to our needs and special requests. This crew makes us feel like family, not like customers. Hats off to the owners of the Begging Burro. What a wise business move to hire mature, professional servers from Cancun's very busy 5-star resort industry.

My only regret is that these wonderful Mexican people cannot stay in Custer year-round. We will miss them over them winter. Perhaps we will have to winter in Cancun.

Regards to All,

(affectionately called Roberto at the Burro)

Definitely a wonderful place from the flowers in the front, the service, the food, and welcoming experience, everything tasted great and perfectly cooked. I'm mostly vegan so it's hard to find good op...tions in rural places. Not only was the host and our server super friendly, but when I ordered a dish and asked to leave out the meat, they didn't just serve me a half meal like most restaurants do in this case. They took an extra step to add ingredients not on the menu, like carrots and mushrooms, so it became a delicious veggie dish and very wholesome. Paired with rice, beans and salsa, yum! My husband also loved his meal, overall a great treat for two tired travelers. Muchas gracias! See More

From MN and needed to get a bite after Wind Cave. Alfredo was an excellent waiter and the food and portions were way better than we expected. Everything was fantastic. I had the ceviché and it was, large and beautifully presented. I highly recommend the Flan for desert. Great meal! I am a foodie big time and I would put this in my top 5 for best Mexican meals I have ever had. No joke. See More
